  • TIME-IN-GRADE REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must meet time-in-grade requirements to be considered eligible. Applicants must have served 1 year at the next lower grade level or equivalent grade level of federal service to qualify
  • A character investigation may be conducted on applicants selected for employment.
  • This position requires a physical examination.
  • The work requires regular bending and recurring physical exertion such as long periods of standing, walking, running, driving, biking, bending, stooping, reaching, crawling, and similar activities.
  • This is a mission essential position.
  • This position requires a psychological examination.
  • Selectee must complete the Field Officer Training Program at the University of North Florida. Failure to do so will be grounds for immediate removal from the position.
  • Applicant will be subject to an Access National Check with written Inquiry (ANACI) and must be able to obtain and maintain access/eligibility to classified information.
  • Selectee will work one of two 12-hour shifts.
  • Firearms requirement: This is a law enforcement position in which officers are required to carry and maintain bi-annual proficiency with firearms.
  • The 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 covers this position. Persons convicted of a misdemeanor or felony crime of domestic violence are not eligible for the position.
  • Selectee must have and maintain a valid state or District of Columbia driver's license.
  • Selectee must have a working knowledge of and be able to oversee the immediate initiation and implementation of GPO's Emergency Notification Systems: VoIP, Fire Board, Big Voice, Netpresenter, and Everbridge.
  • Selectee must review reports, including loss, theft, incident, attendance, activity, assignment, fire, and inventory reports, ensuring they are free of grammatical and formatting errors and can be easily read.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Lead Police Officer, PQ - 0083 - 6 , you must have one (1) year of specialized experience performing policing duties at the PQ-05 or equivalent in the federal service. Specialized experience is described as the following:

Experience that provided knowledge of a body of basic laws and regulations, law enforcement operations, practices, and techniques and involved responsibility for maintaining order and protecting life and property. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in work providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills.

The following medical requirements apply to all applicants:

  • Good near and distant vision
  • Ability to distinguish basic colors
  • Ability to hear conversational voice
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement (03/13/2026) to be considered.

No substitution of education or training may be made for the required specialized experience at the PQ-06 level.

Background Investigation for a Secret Clearance:
To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy; this position requires a Secret clearance. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully completed a background investigation for a Secret clearance. This review could include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs; this security process may take between 6 weeks to 12 months.

GPO will conduct an interim security clearance, pending the completion of the full investigative requirements for the final Secret clearance. The interim security clearance will be granted based on the favorable completion of preliminary checks that are accomplished as part of the security clearance process. The Agency may rescind the tentative offer if the candidate is unable to obtain an interim clearance.

Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act:
This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm. Any person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence cannot lawfully possess a firearm or ammunition [Title 18, U.S.C., Section 922(g) (9)]. A 'misdemeanor crime of domestic violence' is generally defined under the statute as any offense involving the use or attempted use of physical force, or the threatened use of a deadly weapon, committed by the victim's current or former domestic partner, parent, or guardian. The term 'convicted,' as defined in the statute, excludes any person whose conviction has been expunged, set aside, or pardoned, or any person whose civil rights have been restored, unless the pardon, expungement, or restoration of civil rights expressly prohibits the possession of firearms or ammunition.
Candidates who have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence within the meaning of the referenced statute are not qualified for this position. Candidates under consideration must certify whether they have ever been convicted of such an offense. False or fraudulent information provided by candidates is criminally punishable by fine or imprisonment [Title 18, U.S.C., Section 1001] .Maintaining firearm proficiency is also mandatory.
