Duties

Help

Assists BOP-CAREERS Unit Specialist in preparing a variety of electronic templates and entering miscellaneous data in BOP-CAREERS.

Responsible for receiving and screening all correspondence coming into the BOP-CAREERS Unit.

Routes correspondence, circulars, and other materials to appropriate staff members.

Maintains all merit promotion and delegated examining files (electronic and paper), and ensures files contain all required documentation.

Types correspondence, memoranda, meeting minutes, policy materials, tables, reports, travel requests or vouchers, or other similar materials from handwritten copy, rough copy, or typewritten materials, being responsible for correct punctuation, spelling, capitalization, grammar, etc.

Career Transition Programs (CTAP): These programs apply to Federal and/or DOJ employees who meet the definition of surplus or displaced from a position in the competitive service. To receive selection priority for this position, you must:

  • 1. Meet CTAP eligibility criteria;
  • 2. Be rated well-qualified for the position with a score of 85 or above based on scoring at least half of the total possible points for the vacancy KSAs or competencies; and

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements.

Education:

As a general rule, education is not creditable above GS-5 for most positions covered by this standard; however, graduate education may be credited in those few instances where the graduate education is directly related to the work of the position.

OR

Experience:

You must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled.

Some examples of this qualifying experience are:

  • Experience and ability establishing priorities, organizing and maintaining a workload, experience in ordering office supplies and ensuring appropriate quantities for materials are available for office functions.
  • Experience maintaining time and attendance files.
  • Experience conveying basic or administrative information related to staffing, employment, hiring procedures and job vacancies with individuals in the organization and the general public.
  • Experience preparing email responses, letters, memos, and reports related to policy and or procedures and various aspects of staffing, employment, etc.
  • Experience researching, retrieving and collecting data for various reports utilizing a variety of computer programs, files and documents.
  • Experience and basic knowledge of the various policies and guidelines related to staffing (i.e. Human Resource Management Program Statements, Qualification Handbooks).

If applicable, credit will be given for paid and unpaid experience. To receive proper credit, you must show the actual time (such as the number of hours worked per week) spent in activities.

In accordance with 5 U.S.C. 3307, a maximum entry age of 36 has been established for original appointment to a position in a Bureau of Prisons institution.   

The representative rate for this position is $66,825 per annum ($32.02 per hour).

Special Conditions of Employment Section:

Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a urinalysis, physical, and background investigation.  All applicants are subject to National Crime Information Center (NCIC) and credit checks.

This is a non-law enforcement clerical or administrative support position (one-grade interval). Individuals selected for these positions will lose law enforcement coverage and will need to return to a position with "primary" law enforcement coverage to regain coverage.
