Duties

Help
  • Operate, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair single and multiple fuel heating boilers, power boilers, steam and electric powered chillers.
  • Start, operate, adjust, and stop single or multiple fuel power boilers, steam powered chillers and electric powered chillers.
  • Use personal computers and standard software for boiler plant and chiller plant controls.
  • Maintain, repair, and test a variety of complex equipment and systems involving power boilers, single and multiple fuel power boilers, steam, and electric powered chillers.
  • Plan and lay out installation, repair, and/or modification of a variety of complex equipment and systems.
  • Apply and interpret information in detailed blueprints, charts, and sketches to adjust, replace, and repair equipment .
  • Monitor and test the operation of power boilers, steam powered chillers, and electric powered chillers.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • May be required to wear respiratory protection and must pass a pulmonary function test by occupational health.
  • Unassisted lifting of up to 50lbs may be required.
  • May be required to work shift work and/or work on rotating shifts to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays and in other situations.
  • Must pass a Pre-Employment physical and annual physical.
  • Position is adverse-weather-mission essential: with no code red or white, incumbent must report for duty during natural disasters, inclement weather, and other emergencies.
  • Required to work overtime on short notice, an emergency basis and for shift coverage.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver license.
  • Must obtain and maintain an Army motor vehicle operators permit.
  • Boiler Operator License is preferred.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Utility Systems Repairer-Operator (MVO) ~ without more than normal supervision to include repairing and operating Steam and Electric powered chillers and/ or multiple fuel power boilers using specialized equipment to adjust to rigid tolerances, troubleshoot multiple fuel power boilers, manage complex burner controls, and performing repairs as an expert with a high degree of independence. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Effort: Frequently works in confined areas in and around boilers and support equipment, e.g., auxiliary and pollution control equipment. Work requires moderate to strenuous physical effort and long periods of walking, kneeling, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. Frequently lifts and carries boiler parts, equipment, and chemical supplies weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted and occasionally items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment.
  • Working Conditions: Employee normally works indoors on concrete surfaces. Occasionally works outside for short periods. When working outside is subject to prevailing weather conditions. Works on catwalks and ladders. Employee is subject to high temperatures, high noise, rotating machinery, soot, dirt, grease, chemicals, oil, and fumes in the work area. Exposed to toxic effects of refrigerants and steam temperatures up to 115 degrees. Subject to cuts and abrasions from use of tools and equipment and burns from acids, caustics, and contact with pipes and boilers.
