Duties

Help

  • Prepares various surfaces of interior and exterior components of buildings and other structures by mechanically and chemically removing old paint and rust, filling cracks, sanding, and applying fillers and base coats.
  • Mixes, thins, blends, matches, tints, and tones coating materials.
  • Applies coating materials using brushes, rollers, spray guns and other means of application.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean environment.
  • Uses and maintains tools.

  • Depending on the type of position (competitive/excepted) you are selected for, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period OR 2-year trial period.

  • The painter prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds, and platforms, and in situations where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard-to-reach places.
  • The work may be at extreme heights (such as water towers or tall buildings). The work is done inside and outside, with dirt, spray, and fumes usually present.
  • This requires the ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, be strapped into swing stages, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Ability to lift, carry, and set up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds. May be required to handle materials and equipment that weigh 40 pounds or over.
  • Must meet the requirements for "Production Acceptance Certification" (PAC) Program.
  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program. Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing.
  • May be required to assist other works in various crafts.
  • Exposure to toxic paints, chemicals, or other hazards may require occupational health examinations.
  • May be required to train and/or guide lower grade employees.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4100 Painting And Paperhanging Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is the Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

WORKING CONDITIONS: The work is done inside and outside, with dirt, spray, and fumes usually present. The painter is sometimes required
to prepare, treat, and finish surfaces outside in all types of weather. Protective equipment and clothing such as safety shoes, safety glasses or sunglasses, gloves, rain gear, hard hats, coveralls, respirators and other protective gear are required, which are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable. Frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts and bruises; may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones.
