Duties

Help
  • Interpret regulations, technical manuals, and information contained in professional publications relative to fire prevention and protection.
  • Study and analyze the installation's activities to develop fire prevention and protection programs to meet the needs of the installation.
  • Advise the Fire Chief of the need for and recommend ways in which both operations and the physical environment may be rendered less liable to damages of fire.
  • Supervise the Assistant Chief of training and the Assistant Chief of Fire Prevention.
  • Review and approve contingency plans to effectively handle operations and programs.
  • Assign work to subordinates and supervise and direct subordinates' actions when participating in emergency responses, exercises, and routine day-to-day operations.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • Incumbent must wear a uniform and safety apparel in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime. This position performs, as required, mutual aid support to local fire departments.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • Incumbent is required to report for duty during inclement weather, Natural Disasters, and other emergency situations as directed and may be required to remain on duty after the official shift ends, i.e., mandatory overtime; recall to duty.
  • Incumbent must maintain a functioning telephone at residence to aid in contact during recall situations.
  • This position is subject to a one year probation to assess your ability to perform Supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience of which prepared you to do the work in this job.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service which includes: 1) Directing the work of firefighting crews engaged in various activities to include, but not limited to, fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous material response and containment, emergency medical response, facility fire risk surveys and public education campaigns; and 2) Directing operational activities for multiple fire stations; and 3) Instructing firefighter personnel in classroom and hands-on training exercises.

Selective Placement Factor: In addition to the specialized experience required to qualify for the GS-12 level you must also possess and maintain ALL the following Department of Defense (or reciprocal equivalent) certification, certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.

Must possess and maintain DoD Firefighter Certifications:

  • Fire Officer III
  • Fire Instructor II
  • Fire Inspector II
  • HAZMAT Incident Commander
  • Airport Firefighter
