Senior Law Clerk will support the Chief ALJ and other ALJs in all aspects of their duties including:

  • Communicating with parties for litigation, preparing pre-hearing orders and managing formal hearings.
  • Researching complex areas of law, and drafting post hearing orders and written recommended decisions.
  • Litigating issues include registration and controlled substance scheduling matters and involves the interpretation and applicant of federal and state law.
  • Supporting the Chief ALJ with docket management, tracking data, developing metrics, preparing periodic reports and training law clerks and staff.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Top-Security Clearance
  • Males born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service
  • Drug testing designated position
  • Initial appointment is conditional upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprints, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.
  • Must be active member of a Bar Association

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

All applicants must be an active member of a bar in good standing (any U.S. jurisdiction) and possess: 1) a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and have at least 1-year post-J.D. (or equivalent) legal or other relevant experience; 2) excellent academic credentials; 3) strong oral and written advocacy skills; 4) superior legal research and analytical skills; 5) demonstrated ability to function with minimal guidance in a highly demanding environment, and 6) experience as a law clerk or in administrative law preferred.

Specific grade level requirements:

GS-14: At least 3-years post J.D. (or equivalent) legal or other relevant experience such as law clerk, litigation, administrative law, or adjudication experience.

GS-15: At least 4-years post J.D. (or equivalent) legal or other relevant experience such as law clerk, litigation, administrative law, or adjudication experience.

Education

A J.D. degree from a law school accredited by the American Bar Association. All academic degrees and coursework must be completed at a college or university that has obtained accreditation or pre-accreditation status from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
