Duties

Help

As an Aircraft Mechanic Leader, WL-8852-10, you will:

On a regular and recurring basis, lead three or more aircraft mechanic subordinates in performing all phases of repair and reclamation on aircraft systems and equipment, utilizing lifting bags, cranes, hoists, slings, forklifts, and other heavy equipment.

Monitor work of assigned personnel, set the work pace, convey work assignments, and assure that materials, tools, equipment, and stock are available. Coordinate and work with aircraft mechanics, and perform journey level work as required.

Assure that assigned personnel are fully utilized and work is accomplished in accordance with established time frames and priorities. Check work in progress and/or upon completion for compliance with the supervisor's instructions, appropriate technical orders, etc. Serve as a technical advisor by answering questions regarding appropriate procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives. Assure that safety, housekeeping, security, and other environmental rules are followed.

Advise the supervisor of overall work operations, status and progress of work, causes for delays, problems encountered, and individual performance (e.g., additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees). As requested by the supervisor, provide functional planning for the inspection docks. On a daily basis, recommend adjustments in work schedules to provide optimum utilization of personnel in support of functional requirements.

Perform other duties as assigned.

  • This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard, required prior to the effective date of placement.
  • Selectee will be required to wear the military uniform.
  • Acceptance of an excepted service position constitutes concurrence with these requirements as a condition of employment.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Federal employment suitability as determined by a background investigation.

Qualifications

General Experience: Experience or training that has provided the candidate with sufficient knowledge to complete the work of this occupational series. Experience or training which demonstrates the candidates ability to lead other technicians engaged in the duties performed by this occupational series.

Specialized Experience: Experience or training installing, adjusting, aligning, troubleshooting and functionally testing the various major and minor mechanical and pneudraulic systems on an aircraft during overhaul or modification. Experience coordinating the work of other mechanics, and scheduling maintenance to ensure completion of critical actions and optimum workflow. Must have the ability to instruct lower graded mechanics, military and other personnel in the disassembly and re-assembly of crash damaged engines, transmissions, gearboxes, hydraulic components, and fuel controls sufficient for the exhibit to be returned to its shipping container.

Physical Efforts: Work requires moderate physical exertion to climb, stoop, stand, bend, stretch and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment weighing up to 20 pounds. Occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 pounds with mechanical lifting devices or assistance from other workers.

Working Conditions: Works indoors and outdoors; in inclement weather; on icy, wet and slippery ramps, aircraft surfaces, or work stands; and in extreme temperature and humidity. Subject to dangers from toxic fumes, dust, dirt, grease, lubricants, paints, and solvents. Dangers also involve high-pressure air and fluids, fast actuating metal aircraft surfaces such as landing gears, speed brakes, and flaps. Subject to engine noise, heat blast, intake suction, rotating propellers, explosive munitions, electrical voltage, cartridge actuating devices, liquid oxygen, and fire or explosive aircraft fuels, etc. There is frequent exposure to the possibility of cuts, burns, electrical shock, strains, and bone fractures.
