Duties

Help
  • Conduct surveys, independently or in conjunction with a hygienist, to identify and evaluate potential health hazards.
  • Determine compliance with established Federal guidelines.
  • Gather and interpret field data in order to write reports in accordance with industrial hygienist format.
  • In conjunction with other specialists, participate in or arrange for the parent command to assist in the development of controls to minimize or eliminate actual or potential health hazards.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and conduct regular inspections of all work areas to ensure that workers are wearing the required personal protective devices and that work practices designed to minimize or eliminate hazards are being followed.
  • Perform respirator fit testing per appropriate standards and guidelines. Provides worker training on respirator selection, usage, care, sanitation practices and chemical health hazards in the workplace.
  • Maintain lab facilities, equipment - calibration logs, and submits samples for analysis. Receive and issue equipment.
  • Maintain a current inventory of health hazards; orders, receive and ensure supply economy of expendable supplies.

  • Require heavy physical exertion, including extensive bending, lifting, climbing, stooping, and working in cramped areas with potentially inadequate heating, lighting, and ventilation.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states.

Specialized Experience GS-07: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting inspections, calibrating equipment, and providing training.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06)

OR

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Industrial Hygiene, Safety & Occupational Health Management.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience GS-08: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting inspections to identify potential health hazards, collecting samples to send to designated laboratories for inspection, and providing training to employees on workplace safety compliance.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

OR

Education:
One and a half years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Industrial Hygiene, Safety & Occupational Health Management.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Specialized Experience GS-09: One year of specialized experience which includes gathering field data to prepare written health hazard reports, performing analysis on samples to determine degree of toxic material present, and assist in course instruction on equipment procedures.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

OR

Education: Two full years of graduate education or a master's degree in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Industrial Hygiene, Safety & Occupational Health Management.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages.

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
