Duties

Help
  • Executing core manual tasks, including continuous lifting, stacking, and palletizing; requires standing for extended periods in a fast-paced environment.
  • Operate manual and electric pallet jacks to move stock safely while maintaining high spatial awareness in high-traffic areas.
  • Support staff and operational requirements within the National Seed Warehouse System.
  • Maintain facility cleanliness and safety, including coolers, mixing areas, storage racks, and motorized equipment.
  • Manage the receipt of bulk inventory by manually and mechanically unloading semi-trailers, involving repetitive lifting of bags up to 50 lbs.
  • Work effectively in conditions involving extreme hot/cold temperatures, high dust/organic particulates, and constant machinery noise.
  • Utilize industrial shrink-wrap, strapping tools, and load bars to stabilize heavy, shifting loads for rugged transport conditions.

Qualifications

The Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualifications System for Trades and Labor Occupations will be used in determining your qualifications. To qualify for a Materials Handler WG-04, you must have experience in the operation (day-to-day activity) of a cache or warehouse in order to procure, issue, control, store and judge the physical condition of a wide variety of equipment and supplies.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands: Incumbent's work requires standing, stooping, bending, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts and carries supplies. materials. and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a recurring basis. The heavier items are moved with weight-handling equipment or with assistance from other workers. Work is generally performed on a concrete or a hard surface floor.

Work Environment: Incumbent works in both inside and outside areas. Work may occur in areas that are hot, cold, damp, drafty, or poorly lighted. Materials Handlers are frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, scrapes, bruises, and falls, and injury from falling stock or mechanized work areas. The work is dirty, dusty, and greasy. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer. Involves frequent driving and deliveries on paved and unimproved roads.
