Summary

The Electrician Supervisor is under the general supervision of the Maintenance and Operations General Supervisor of the TVHS Engineering Service at the Nashville Campus, using his/her own judgement on the most practical method of performing the job. Must have experience and training required to be a journeyman electrician or electronics mechanic; ability to work from sketches and blueprints; and knowledge of electrical codes and their application.

As the Electrician Supervisor, the incumbent's duties include, but are not limited to:

  • The Electrician Supervisor plans the assignments of workers; use of equipment, facilities, materials and tools on a week to week or month to month basis.
  • The Electrician Supervisor establishes deadlines, priorities, and work sequences, and plans work assignments based on general work schedules, methods and policies set by higher level supervisors.
  • Coordinates work with supporting or related work controlled by other supervisors.
  • Determines the number and types of workers needed to accomplish specific tasks and projects assigned to his section.
  • Redirects individual workers and resources to accomplish unanticipated work.
  • Tracks and reports progress on work assignments.
  • Participates with M&O General Supervisor and higher level supervisors in the initial planning of current and future work schedules, budget requests, staffing needs, estimates, and recommendations as to scheduling projected work.
  • Incumbent assigns work to individuals and provides technical direction.
  • Observes work in progress to anticipate and resolve problems, reassigns personnel within groups supervised, and coordinates work among workers and other supervisors.
  • Inspects completed work for quality and work order requirements.
  • Investigates work related problems.
  • Recommends solutions to staffing problems, engineering requirements, and work operations.
  • Plans and establishes overall leave schedule for Electric shop.
  • Determines training needs.
  • Recommends disciplinary actions.
  • Initiates recommendations for promotion or reassignment of subordinates.
  • Assures safe work practices and good housekeeping practices.
  • Supports/explains management programs to subordinates.
  • Schedules and determines the preventive maintenance necessary for all equipment essential to the operation of the medical center under his responsibility.
  • Determines the need for and develops work statements for service contracts for equipment and systems which fall under his/her area of responsibility.

Physical Requirements: The duties of this position require physical exertion involving lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes and shapes. Physical effort is exerted in walking, running, climbing, crawling, and bending. Strain related to lack of movement such as standing in place, crouching, or stooping for extended periods of time.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). It is a requirement that all HCP to receive annual seasonal influenza vaccination or obtain an exemption for medical or religious reasons. Wearing a face mask is required when an exemption to the influenza vaccination has been granted. HCP in violation of this directive may face disciplinary action up to and including removal from federal service. HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations or who come into contact with VA patients or other HCP as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased medical facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, remote and onsite, paid and without compensation, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, researchers, volunteers and health professions trainees (HPTs) who are expected to perform any or all of their work at these facilities. HPTs may be paid or unpaid and include residents, interns, fellows and students. HCP also includes VHA personnel providing home-based care to Veterans and drivers and other personnel whose duties put them in contact with patients outside VA medical facilities.
