Summary

You will serve as a INDUSTRIAL HYGIENE TECHNICAN of NMRTC PORTSMOUTH VA.

THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT. Section 1109 of the National Defense Authorization Act Fiscal Year 2020 Public Law 116-92 amended Section 9905 of title 5, United States Code (U.S.C.) to streamline and simplify certain Department of Defense civilian Direct Hire Authorities to recruit and appoint qualified candidates directly to certain positions in the competitive service in the Department of Defense.

Duties

Help
  • You will manage industrial hygiene equipment/instrumentation ensuring that the equipment is maintained in a ready state, properly charged/cycled, and forwarded for factory calibration at the proper time and intervals.
  • You will review files for previously collected data, plans/manages sample collection in accordance with assigned monitoring programs, and coordinates monitoring efforts with serviced command personnel.
  • You will perform sampling of potential health hazardous exposures to chemical, physical, and biological stressors in a variety of workplaces.
  • You will consult with industrial hygiene staff and analytical laboratories regarding appropriate sampling methodology on more difficult or unusual projects.

Qualifications


FOR THE GS-06:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-05) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:

  • Experience in applying practical knowledge of Industrial hygiene concepts and principles.
  • Experience having knowledge to identify health hazards in an occupational setting.
  • Experience in providing technical assistance in collecting air and noise samples.
  • Experience in creating standard operating procedures for industrial hygiene equipment and calibration.

FOR THE GS-05:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the (GS-04) grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
  • Experience in applying standard operating procedures and taking notes of any violation of standards in the workplaces.
  • Experience utilizing MS Office Suite software or web-based databases to generate reports for data analysis.
  • Experience with calibration of industrial hygiene or environmental laboratory equipment.
  • Experience identifying workplace hazards during an industrial hygiene or safety inspection.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.

For GS-06 - Successful completion of: One half full year (9 Semester hours) of graduate level education directly related to the position. (If using education to qualify copy of transcript must be attached) - Failure to submit this information WILL result in an ineligible rating.

For GS-05 - Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position. (If using education to qualify copy of transcript must be attached) - Failure to submit this information WILL result in an ineligible rating.
