The primary purpose of this position is to provide full performance level work in constructing, installing, repairing, modifying wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit and structural soundness, performing the full range of roofing repair and to include, tearing-off old roofing, sheathing, shingling, truss work and leak detection.

Duties

Help

  • Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, drawings, specifications, and work orders in the construction and maintenance of installation facilities.
  • Performs work involved in the maintenance, installation, repair, and weatherproofing of roof.
  • Following clear-cut work orders and instructions from supervisors or higher-grade worker, performs masonry task involved in the maintenance, repair, alteration, and construction of interior and exterior surfaces and structures.
  • Independently applies skilled methods, techniques, and advanced shop mathematics to construct, install, repair, and modify a wide variety of structures. Works on projects, such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, interior and exterior trim, and other miscellaneous items.
  • Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.
  • Uses and maintains tools.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-4600 Wood Work Family Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

IDEAL CANDIDATE:
A High School Diploma or equivalent is preferred. Completion of an apprenticeship or vocational training program in Cement Masonry and roofing is desired. A valid Florida driver's license will be required. Four years' experience as a Mason and Roofer or an equivalent combination of education and experience is desirable but not always required. An understanding of construction principles, safety protocols, and building codes is advantageous. Physical fitness and ability to perform strenuous tasks without restrictions (lifting 50 lbs. unassisted frequently). Strong work ethic, reliability, and punctuality are essential qualities for this role. Ability to read and interpret blueprints, project plans, and specifications is beneficial. Our ideal candidate is someone with integrity who takes pride in their work, also is a TEAM player, works great with other members! Good physical stamina and strength to stand, bend, lift, and carry heavy and bulky items. Excellent time management and organizational skills to prioritize tasks and meet project deadlines.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Effort:
Uses hand and power tools and equipment that may require standing and holding tools in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, and stooping. On-site work typically requires crawling, climbing on ladders, scaffolds, and roof tops. The work may be at extreme heights (such as water towers or tall buildings). Strenuous physical exertion is sometimes required when handling heavy and bulky materials such as sheets of plywood and other construction materials. May lift and move materials up to 40 pounds, unassisted, and occasionally lift or move heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Frequently requires lifting up to 100 pounds while carrying rolls of roofing felt, shingles, and asphalt.

Working Conditions:
Works inside shops and outside at job sites. In shops, is exposed to moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, fumes, and hazards associated with carpentry, painting, and roofing trades. At job sites, may be exposed to weather conditions and hazards of working on and around scaffolds and ladders and are subject to cuts, bruises, and contusions; may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones. May work in confined areas, such as crawl spaces and attics that may be dusty or dirty. Working with asphalt results in exposure to unusually dirty conditions (permanent damage to clothes and shoes) and burns from hot asphalt. Uses protective devices, such as ear plugs, safety glasses, respirators, safety shoes, hard hats, coveralls, gloves, rain gear, and other protective gear are required, which are sometimes heavy and uncomfortable.
