Duties

Help

The primary purpose of this position is to accomplish the day-to-day tasks necessary for an effective Integrated Pest Management Program. Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:

  • Develops survey, inspection, and treatment schedules.
  • Completes administrative records to document the target pest treated, date of treatment, pesticides used, and application methods.
  • Identifies pests, locates the source, and determines appropriate control method; physical or chemical and sanitation needs to achieve the most effective results.
  • Coordinates with medical center staff to ensure safety and protection of patients, employees, surfaces, and grounds.
  • Measures, weighs, and mixes chemicals appropriate to achieve desired control measures against targeted pests.
  • Selects and maintains equipment used in operations such as hand and power sprayers, fogging devices, dusters, and traps.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:00am - 3:30pm

Qualifications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Pest control workers often lift, and handle materials weighing over 50 pounds and carry chemical solutions and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds for extended periods. They occasionally work in cramped and inconvenient surroundings requiring manipulation of equipment in awkward positions for prolonged periods. Work frequently requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods. They may move furniture and equipment and operate high impact pneumatic hammers as well as various carpentry and masonry tools.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SCREEN-OUT) - Two Selective Placement Factors (SPF) have been identified for this position. Selective Placement Factors (SPF) are a prerequisite to appointment and represent minimum requirements for the position. Applicants who do not meet the SPF are ineligible for further consideration.

  1. The SPF for this position is: Requires a State Certification in the following areas: public health, structural and ornamental insect and disease control. This certification ensures your knowledge of the regulations using chemical agents as set forth by the Environmental Protection Agency, State, and local authorities. (Note: To receive credit, this information must be supported by your resume. If referred for interview, a copy of your certification will be required at that time)
  1. The SPF for this position is: Requires a valid State Driver's License to operate a truck, cherry picker, tractor and motor board. (Do Not provide a copy of license with your application. We cannot accept pictures. If referred for interview, your license will be verified at that time.

SCREEN-OUT:
Do you have the ability to perform the work of a Pest Controller without more than normal supervision? I have experience identifying common pests by sight, physical characteristics, habits, hiding areas and independently determining appropriate pest measures; selecting and mixing approved pesticides and chemicals; applying pesticides in accordance with labeled instructions and warnings; and storing, handling and disposing of all pesticides and containers as required by all local, state, and federal regulations. (Resume must support the duties you have performed related to this position to receive credit. We will not make assumptions regarding experience.)

Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
