Duties

Help

1. The incumbent will teach the provided program sail theory outline in the classroom and techniques of proper rigging and sailing on the water. Also, teach the proper techniques and basic fundamentals of kayaking. Perform maintenance on sailboat and kayak fleet.
2. May issue equipment and boats to customers. Recording of class rosters logging in and out of boats, and ensure damage to boats or missing parts is tracked and accounted for. Incumbent will contact customers interested in programs, promote the classes and follow up where need be to ensure customer satisfaction.
3. Incumbent will perform ail cleaning and upkeep of boats prior to class usage. AH boat Inspections are done when rental reservations are made on such equipment.
4. Keep alert surveillance of all equipment and activity program. Ensure that safety of all participants, and ensure rules for rental of boats are followed.
5. Assist other staff with marina related activities.
Controls over the Position
Incumbent reports directly to the manager of the marina or assistant in manager's absence. Work is reviewed in terms of how effective sailing and kayaking is instructed, and how well maintained the fleet is kept. Minor decision making will be required.

Qualifications

Resumes must include information which demonstrates experience and knowledge, skills, and ability (KSAs) as they relate to this position. Applicants are encouraged to be clear and specific when describing their experience level and KSAs.

A qualified candidate must possess:

  • Incumbent should have a working knowledge of sailing procedures and ability to instruct sailing and kayaking techniques.
  • Incumbent should have a small boat sailing instructor qualification from US Sailing or equivalent, e.g., US Navy MWR Instructor Certification OR documented local sailing instructor certification equivalent OR US Sailing Basic Keelboat Instructor Certification OR Basic Keelboat Instructor Trainer Certification OR other Nationally recognized organizations (the American Sailing Association (ASA) and US Coast Guard certification).
  • Two years experience in teaching and leading groups.
  • Experience in operating small power boats.
  • Must be a mature individual who is professional and capable of exercising control of group of people.
  • Incumbent will be performing tasks which call for frequent bending, standing and lifting.
  • May lift up to 70 pounds in weight.
  • Will have to launch and retrieve small boats. Will have to run an outboard motor on instruction boat.
  • Physical exertion moderate to heavy. Work Is both indoors and outdoors in the elements.
  • May be exposed to cuts, burns, water, sun, windburn, and inclement weather.
