Duties

Help

- Operates hydroelectric generators by starting, stopping and controlling as necessary to meet water or power requirements. Performs electrical switching in power plants and switch yards at voltages up to 230kv.

- Operates turbine control gates, voltage regulators and other auxiliary equipment normally associated with power generation, effecting change in generation and plant conditions.

- Operates electro-mechanical systems, supervisory control equipment, communications equipment (voice radios, microwave radios and standard telephone equipment) and computer terminals.

- Controls water release equipment, such as ring follower gates, hollow jet valves, ring gate, in combination with generators to control river flow at the facility.

- Uses defined standards such as those found in Facilities, Instructions, Standards and Techniques (FIST) documents, Reclamation Safety and Health Standards (RSHS), OSHA, National Electric Code (NEC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), etc. to ensure compliance with programs for the safe, efficient, technically sound operations and maintenance of powerplant equipment and systems.

Condition of Employment For Probationary Period: As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider:

  • your performance and conduct;
  • the needs and interests of the agency;
  • whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and

The Powerplant Operator position has a 3 step pay system and applicants initially hired into this position/pay system will be hired at the step 1 wage rate of $51.66 per hour. After a one year period from the date of hire and upon performing successfully in this position and approved by the supervisor, the incumbent may be advanced to the step 2 wage rate of $53.81 per hour. Again, after a one year period, successful job performance and supervisory approval, the incumbent may be advanced to the step 3 wage rate of $55.96 per hour. Annual wage adjustments are reviewed and adjusted the first full pay period in May of each year.

Reclamation has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework only during an emergency or natural disaster.
