Duties

Help
  • Installs, maintains, modifies, troubleshoots, tests, and repairs electrical wiring systems, related switches, controls, distribution panels, and outlet boxes, as well as a wide variety of electrical fixtures, tools and appliances.
  • Following maintenance schedules and inspections or work orders, performs maintenance services, diagnoses system or equipment malfunction, and repairs as necessary.
  • Inspects, maintains, cleans, repairs, tests, and adjusts a variety of equipment, circuitry, and fixtures such as, electrical buzzer and bell circuits, light sockets, lighting fixtures, signal generators, and shop equipment.
  • Tests circuits and equipment by use of voltmeter, ammeter, and wattmeter. Repairs lighting systems or other systems atop antenna or water towers.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain Alaska Driver's License.
  • Must be able to operate motor vehicles up to one-ton capacity in order to haul supplies, parts, and equipment as necessary.
  • The incumbent may be required to either remain at work, be recalled to work after normal duty hours, and/or be required to report to work in inclement weather due to mission requirements.
  • This position may require a physical and must be able to carry or lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) of 10% is required with this position.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Electrician ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties. I can service wiring systems, perform disassemble and assembly work, install brackets, shelves and racks, remove and replace controls and fixtures, and repair wiring. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT - Work requires the incumbent to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, and work in uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 20 lbs and occasionally may lift and carry items that weigh up to 50 lbs. Must have normal color perception to determine colors of various wires.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS - Works inside buildings and shops and outside. Subject to contact with dirt, dust, and grease; shocks and burns from high voltage; cuts and bruises. May be required to work atop water and antenna towers up to 180 feet in height, with danger to self from working at extreme heights. Incumbent may sometimes be required to make repairs and installations outside in inclement weather and in work areas that are noisy. Occasionally may be exposed to possibility of broken bones, electrical shock and burns and frequently exposed to possibility of cuts and bruises. The incumbent of this position is on occasion exposed to toxic chemicals of various kinds, fibrous glass and extreme heat in confined spaces and working areas. Duty location is in Alaska and will subject employee to extreme weather conditions including wind, rain, snow and temperatures exceeding 50 degrees below zero due to emergency situations.. I have the ability to perform common duties. I can service wiring systems, perform disassemble and assembly work, install brackets, shelves and racks, remove and replace controls and fixtures, and repair wiring. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
