Major duties include:

  • Complies with written VA regulations, Medical Center and Environmental Management Service Line policies and procedures.
  • Meets assignment changes and/or work pressures in mature, professional manner.
  • Demonstrates appropriate courtesy in dealings with customers, patients, visitors and fellow employees.
  • Incumbent trains assigned lower grade Laundry Workers in all phases of procedures and operations.
  • Maintains production reports and other documentation of duties performed.
  • Unloads soiled linen from carts and empties bags onto a conveyor belt system.
  • Sorts soiled linens into designated classification categories by operating soiled sorting system to maintain continual availability of linens to support operation of washers
  • Hand folds and stacks pajama tops, pajama pants, robes, mattress pads and blankets.
  • Fan-folds and stacks surgical towels and other surgical linen items.
  • Assembles and wraps surgical packs.
  • Inspects all linen items; identifies and separates those items from circulating inventory for condition correction if found to be stained, torn or otherwise unacceptable.
  • Operates equipment safely and properly as specified in section training and manufacturers' operation manuals.
  • Removes processed linen items from conveyor belt and places items in prescribed quantities, direction and location of flow rack system.
  • Accurately fill linen orders for distribution by neatly placing linen items on designated racks or carts and by following established distribution schedules.
  • Loads linen carts onto automated delivery bases and program computer system for dispatch to appropriate location following established schedules. Unload linen carts from automated delivery bases and deliver to designated delivery locations.
  • Transports special linen requests to requesting areas.
  • Collects soiled uniforms and scrubs and delivers to designated area for processing.
  • Receives pre-conditioned uniforms and scrubs, places on hangers and inspects for quality and condition to ensure product acceptability.
  • Processes uniforms and scrubs by operating steam tunnel and assures availability for uniform and scrub issue areas.
  • Makes necessary and authorized minor adjustments to equipment; reports needed equipment repairs to the Supervisor.
  • Assures daily, weekly and monthly cleaning of equipment in accordance with section policies.
  • Assures daily, weekly and monthly cleaning of assigned area in accordance with section policies.
  • Assures all trash, drops and rewash are removed from assigned work area and taken to designated pick-up areas in accordance with section policies. - Uses proper handling, dilution and selection of chemicals, tools and equipment for assigned duties.
  • Uses good body mechanics to prevent injury to self and others.
  • Uses and stores protective attire appropriately in designated area and manner.
  • Reports to supervisor all safety issues and maintenance needs.
  • Serves as resource to assist lower grade operators to become proficient in the safe performance of duties.

Work Schedule: To be determined (6:00am-2:30pm/ 7:00am-3:30pm/ 8:00am-4:30pm/ 2:30pm-11:00PM); subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 03/04/2026.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Most tasks require varying degrees of muscular effort and hand-to-eye coordination to assure safe and efficient use of equipment and supplies. Work requires frequent bending or stooping, prolonged walking, standing, working in cramped positions and climbing. Work requires frequent lifting and moving heavy items weighing 40 to 50 pounds. Occasionally lifts objects weighing over 50 pounds. Work requires visual acuity to assure completion of tasks in acceptably clean and aseptic manner.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
