Duties

Help
  • Provide occupational safety oversight of public health command operations throughout the organization.
  • Ensure safety review and risk assessment of public health command operation plans/policies to provide technical advice and incorporate safety countermeasures.
  • Provide technical safety and occupational health guidance on training, facility design, contractor monitoring, risk assessments, and other safety issues to the local market commander, staff and operating officials.
  • Schedule and conducts surveys, inspections, assessments and staff assistance visits of health operations to identify and evaluate risks potentially involving various work environments and occupations throughout the area of responsibility.
  • Investigate fatalities and serious accidents within the organization.
  • Collect information about deficiencies, and recommends opportunities for improvement in safety, hazardous waste and materials, emergency management, fire prevention, equipment and utility systems.

  • Required to observe established safe working procedures and wear Personnel Protective Equipment clothing and/or equipment provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions.
  • Position is required to perform approximately 5% TDY/travel.
  • Required to complete pre-employment physical and follow-up physical exams in accordance with Occupational Health requirements.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position is required to possess or complete CP-12 Level I Professional Certification program within 24 months of appointment.
  • This position has been designated “Mission Essential”.
  • A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
  • Required to be screened for and obtain necessary immunizations/vaccinations (hepatitis, influenza, etc.), unless exempted by a licensed physician.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes conducting safety and occupational health inspections, managing safety or occupational health program elements, and applying safety and occupational health laws, regulations, principles, theories, practices, and procedures to advise on or resolve technical matters dealing with occupational safety and health requirements. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.


Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
