Duties

Help
  • Operates power sweeper to sweep clean interior floors, Jackson Alleys and the sidewalks adjacent to GPO buildings.
  • Operates an electrically powered industrial fork truck or a power hand jack to load/unload trash hoppers, skids, pallets, bales, and rolls.
  • Performs related duties such as physically moves trash hoppers in areas where industrial trucks are not permitted.
  • Performs daily, weekly, and other periodic cleaning task in the offices, lobby, restrooms, hallways, computer room etc.
  • Maintains grass cutting and weed control on and near parking lots by safe operation of weed whackers, bush hogs, and hand tools as required.

  • Physical - Effort: Work involves light to moderate physical effort to reach, bend, turn, or move hand, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls when operating the power sweeper or low lift truck.
  • Working Conditions: Exposed to vibrations, loud noises, and the risk of injury from use of various electrically powered and/or gas/propane power tools and equipment.
  • Working Conditions: Duties are performed in a well-lighted, heated and ventilated area. When work is done outside, the work is generally done when good weather condiitons exist.
  • Working Conditions: Incumbent is exposed to dirt, disagreeable odors and chap hands or other skin irriations from strong cleaning solutions.
  • This position requires that the applicant obtain and maintain a valid powered low lift license.
  • This position requires that the applicant Must have a valid state or District of Columbia drivers license.

Qualifications

To qualify for the Forklift Operator, KX-5704-04 position, applicants must meet the following Screen Out-Element: #1 Ability To Do The Work Of the Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element. If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT ELEMENT is not sufficient, you will not receive further consideration. In addition to the requirements above, applicants must have the following knowledge and abilities:
1)Handling controls for starting stopping, backing and driving a power sweeper/low lift truck forklift through narrow aisles, and storage areas, 2)Safely operating a low lift truck forklift or power sweeper while taking in account the dimensions, balancing and maximum weight load capacity of the fork lift, 3) Performing operator inspection checks on power trucks, 4) Handling and controlling heavy and light weight powered equipment such as vacuum cleaners, high speed buffers, polishers and floor scrubbers. outbound shipment; and 5) Operating forklifts with knowledge of the Occupational Safety and Hazard Administration (OSHA) guidelines to prevent injury to personnel or damage to equipment and materials.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Background Investigation:
To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully completed a background investigation for Suitability. This review could include financial issues such as delinquency in the payment of debts, child support and/or tax obligations, as well as certain criminal offenses and illegal use or possession of drugs. Depending on the type of background investigation required, the security process may take between 6 weeks to 12 months.
