Summary

Join the Bureau of Land Management as a Seasonal Survey Aid supporting land surveying operations on public lands. You will assist survey crews with collecting measurements, marking survey points, operating GPS and leveling equipment, and recording field data while working outdoors in varied and sometimes rugged conditions.

This position is assigned to the California State Office. The duty location will be either Bishop, CA or El Dorado Hills, CA.

Duties

Help
  • Works as part of a survey team by following technical instructions, communicating field information, and assisting higher-graded survey personnel with project tasks.
  • Perform a variety of basic or detailed procedural tasks in support of surveying work.
  • Assist with marking survey points, reference points, and measuring distances for survey ties and corner locations.
  • Reads and interprets maps, plats, aerial imagery, and survey notes to support field survey operations.
  • Assists survey crews in performing land surveying activities by collecting measurements, recording field data, and supporting boundary and location determinations.
  • Assist in the operation and maintenance of surveying tools and equipment such as survey rods, measuring devices, GPS units, and leveling instruments.
  • May be required to operate 4-wheel drive vehicles or ATVs.

Qualifications

To qualify for the GS-02 level you musthave at least 3 months of general experience. General experience may be any type of work that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of the position or that provides familiarity with the duties of the position. OR Completion of high school graduation or equivalent.

To qualify for the GS-03 level you must meet the individual occupational requirement (IOR) and have at least 6 months of general experience or qualifying education as outlined below:

  • IOR: Successful completion of 1 year of postsecondary education that included at least one course in surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics.
AND
  • General experience may be any type of work that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of the position or that provides familiarity with the duties of the position. OR 1 year of education above high school with a course of study directly related to the position. Education must have been obtained in an accredited business or technical school, junior college, college or university for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. OR Technical programs specialized in land surveying or surveying technology that required completion of up to 40 hours per week of instruction and are usually of at least 3 months duration may be qualifying. To be creditable, such program must have been designed specifically as career preparation for the work of the position being filled and must have provided the you with the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work. OR A combination of qualifying education and experience.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work and may have been gained in the Federal service, private sector, military, volunteer work, Peace Corps, Ameri Corps, or other work, and must be clearly documented in your resume. Physical Demands: Work requires physical exertion such as bending and walking on a variety of terrain. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to effectively perform the work of the position including tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods of work away from vehicles.

Work Environment: Most work is completed in the field. Incumbent may be subject to cuts, bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions, discomforts from pests or animals. Office work is performed in an adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area.
