Duties

Help
  • Administrative Support Assistants independently perform a wide variety of functions related to budget and finance, human resources, natural resources, travel, timekeeping/payroll, correspondence, records, collections, and public contact.
  • Administrative Support Assistants provide general information concerning office operations to the public both orally and in writing.
  • They may also serve as a collections officer preparing appropriate receipts, records, and tracking forms; depositing monies and reconcile accounts receivable.
  • Administrative Support Assistants may be expected to handle incoming/outgoing mail, manage a central filing system, both paper and electronic, and provide assistance in researching and locating files.

GS-5: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting with general correspondence, entering time and attendance records in an automated payroll system, aiding in the entering of data and entering of records, inventories, and dispositions in accordance with records schedule. Basic knowledge of automated systems for tasks such as electronic mail, time and attendance reporting, internet, and multi-line telephone.

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with related course work.

GS-6: One (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include independently preparing general correspondence, entering time and attendance records in an automated payroll system, providing assistance in the completion of records review, inventories, and dispositions in accordance with records schedule. Additionally, a broad working knowledge of the functions related to budget and finance, natural resources, travel, timekeeping/payroll, correspondence, records, collections, and public contact.

GS-7: One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-6 level in the federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include performing complex administrative support with general correspondence, entering time and attendance records into an automated payroll system, advising in the completion of records review, inventories, and dispositions in accordance with records schedule. Additionally, the ability to perform independent judgement to the following functions in budget and finance, natural resources, travel, timekeeping/payroll, correspondence, records, collections, and public contact.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical and Work Demands: The work is typically sedentary. Some work may require periods of walking, standing, bending, or driving a motor vehicle. The incumbent may frequently lift relatively light boxes, materials, and supplies and /or carry file folder's copied materials, books, and other similar materials. Work is typically located in an adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated office environment. The work environment may involve everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, mail distribution centers, meeting and training rooms, libraries, or motor vehicles.

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.

This is a temporary seasonal appointment, defined as employment in a position performing annually recurring work lasting less than six months per year, not to exceed 1,560 hours per service year.

  • The service year is a 12-month period beginning on the employee's initial DOI appointment date. Employees may hold more than one appointment within the same service year, provided the appointments are to different positions.
Training Hours:
  • For initial appointments, employees may receive additional training hours that do not count toward the 1,560-hour limit during the first 120 days following appointment.
  • For subsequent appointments, employees may receive up to 80 hours (two weeks) of training per year following reappointment, without regard to the service-year limitation.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.
