Duties

Help
  • Develop and conduct the training program for the Installation Fire Department.
  • Instruct fire department personnel in all phases of fire protection and prevention techniques.
  • Lead and conduct classes for active duty, civilians and visiting personnel in public safety.
  • Experience using firefighting techniques associated with structure, ground, equipment, facilities, and hazardous waste and chemical operations.
  • Develops and updates the training program for the Installation Fire Department.
  • Performs administrative tasks associated with the training function to include making evaluations, conducting inspections and training other instructors.
  • Establishes and maintains individual training requirement and fire protection training records.
  • Train personnel in accepted practices set forth by Occupational Safety and Health Program in order to promote a safe work environment.
  • Serves as HAZMAT/WMD Incident Command, as needed.
  • As mandated by the needs of the organization, performs normal firefighting duties.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • As a "Key" position, the incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • This position requires a 60-hour weekly tour of duty and 120 hours per pay period, may be required to work overtime, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program and pass a Firefighters Agility Test.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

In order to qualify, you must meet the specialized experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Developing and conducting training of firefighting personnel in full range of fire protection and prevention utilizing lecture and demonstration techniques. 2) Evaluating and reporting on performance progress and training needs of the firefighters and organization 3) Performing firefighter, Emergency Medical response and fire prevention inspection duties as required. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires you to possess and maintain at the time of application the following DoD, Pro-Board, or IFSAC Firefighter II, Pumper, Aerial, Fire Officer II, Fire Instructor II, Fire Inspector II, HAZMAT Incident Commander, Health and Safety Officer and Incident Safety Officer.

This position requires you to possess and maintain Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification issued by the State of Maryland or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (NREMT-B).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
