About the Position: Sierra Army Depot is located in Herlong CA, a rural town in Northern California. Herlong is approximately 60 miles north of Reno, NV, and 35 miles south of Susanville, CA. The depot serves as an Army Expeditionary Logistical Support Center. Employees work Mon-Thurs, 0630-1700 hrs. Youth Facilities and childcare available. Mass transportation is available at minimal cost. Surrounding area boasts a full range of outdoor sports and recreation activities.

Duties

Help
  • Repair, replace and adjust road wheel axles, tracks, road wheel bearings, idler wheels, idler bearings and oil seals.
  • Diagnose and repair all types of failures in electrical systems.
  • Remove engines or power packs from the vehicles.
  • Conduct functional and performance tests on completed work.
  • Perform major repairs and/or rebuild of combustion powered generators, compressors and other comparably complex components.
  • Perform the full range of overhaul and repair work on ground tactical vehicles and heavy-duty mobile equipment.

  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.
  • Due to the nature of this position, employees are required to work both planned and unscheduled overtime.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties of heavy mobile vehicles and equipment. I can disassemble vehicle engines for repairs and replace defective parts. I work under normal supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • PHYSICAL EFFORT: The incumbent works in tiring and uncomfortable positions for long periods. Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, crouching and laying. Sometimes works on top of and under equipment in cramped or awkward positions. Performs strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 45 lbs, and often puts forth similar effort in pushing, pulling, turning, positioning, and adjusting parts, assemblies, equipment and tools. Lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers and/or lifting devices.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent may work inside or outside. Inside, they are frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperature and loud noise. Outside, they may work in bad weather, in rain or snow, or in wet or dry areas. Incumbent is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from grease, oil, dust, heat, fumes, and hard damp floors or surfaces. Incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises, strains and electrical shock while repairing, positioning, adjusting and moving equipment; and is exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acids, fluids and lubricants. To reduce the dangers and irritations from the above conditions, the incumbent must follow numerous safety procedures, and wears equipment such as protective eye-glasses, ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, respirators, gloves and other protective clothing. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use, and may be worn or used for long periods.
