Duties

Help
  • Archeological Technicians assist other professional cultural resource specialists with on-the-ground field studies to identify cultural, historical, and/or paleontological resources.
  • Work may involve designing and conducting inventories, and/or compiling and interpreting collected data. As well as compiling and interpreting collected data and researching reference materials.
  • Archeological Technicians may also research reference materials, write reports on inventory activities, or prepare documents for determinations of eligibility to the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Research files and records to obtain information about sites scheduled for cultural inventories. Reviews reference material to aid in identification of artifacts recovered during inventories.
  • Plans and carries out non-complex cultural resource field inventories. Determines inventory methods to use, identifies area to be inventoried, schedules inventory, and arranges for equipment, supplies and transportation.

GS-5: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least GS-4 level. Examples of specialized experience may include assisting professional archeologist in performing actual field studies; and carrying out field studies to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources for planning systems regarding cultural resources.

Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with related course work.

A combination of experience and education to meet total experience.

GS-6: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience may include working with a professional archeologist, planning and carrying out field studies to identify cultural, historic and/or paleontological resources and writing reports based on findings; and applying and adapting a wide range of established data analysis methods to fit a variety of circumstances.

GS-7: One (1) year of specialized work experience equivalent to GS-6 level. Examples of specialized experience may include researching reference materials such as site maps, existing archeological inventory information, books and other written data for possible cultural sites within an area of a proposed Federal undertaking; designing and conducting cultural resources inventories; navigating and recording site and survey information using a GPS; preparing or assisting with preparation of cultural resource inventory reports and maps for submission to the state historic preservation office; and preparing or assisting with preparation of forms for determination of eligibility and/or nomination of sites to the National Register of Historic Places.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Physical Demands/Work Environments: Work requires some physical exertion such as bending and walking/hiking in terrain that is rough, rocky, mountainous and densely vegetated that may also be steep, wet and muddy. Required to lift and carry equipment necessary to perform the work of the position, this includes tools, personal protective equipment, food and water for extended periods away from a vehicle. Work while in the office is performed in adequately lighted, ventilated, cooled and heated area. Fieldwork is subject to cuts and bruises, extreme and adverse weather conditions and injuries and discomforts from pests and animals.

This is a temporary seasonal appointment, defined as employment in a position performing annually recurring work lasting less than six months per year, not to exceed 1,560 hours per service year.

The service year is a 12-month period beginning on the employee's initial DOI appointment date. Employees may hold more than one appointment within the same service year, provided the appointments are to different positions.

Training Hours:

- For initial appointments, employees may receive additional training hours that do not count toward the 1,560-hour limit during the first 120 days following appointment.

- For subsequent appointments, employees may receive up to 80 hours (two weeks) of training per year following reappointment, without regard to the service-year limitation.
