Summary

This position is located in the Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration, Mid Atlantic Health Care Network, Richmond Medical Center, in the Electrical Section of Engineering Service. The incumbent leads a group of journey level Electricians, Electronic Mechanics and also performs nonsupervisory work of the same type as the employees led. The primary purpose of this position is to install, repair, and maintain the electrical systems throughout the medical center.

Help

The Electrician Work Leader in the absence of the Electrician Supervisor or upon assignment, is responsible for performance coordination and verification- of all functional checks and performance verification on work on the employees in the section throughout the approximately 2 million square foot hospital including patient care, administrative areas and interstitial space.

  • Responsible for installing, modifying, troubleshooting, repairing, troubleshooting, and performing preventive maintenance and test electrical lines, circuits, systems, controls and equipment with a wide range of voltage, amperage, and phase and frequency requirements.
  • Maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, operating and testing emergency power distribution system consisting of two 2000KW generators, one 1000KW generators, four 600kw generators, two 350kw generators, two 175kw, generators, two 125kw generators, thirty five transfer switches, 480 volt switchgear, 1200kw bad bank, 26 volt de batteries and chargers, fuel pumps and day tanks.
  • Maintain power distribution system consisting of 13,200 volt switchgear and oil filled transformers, 480 volt switchgear, dry transformers and breaker panel boards, 208/120 volt transformers and breaker panels, main switchgear batteries.
  • Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, operates and test 4160 volt switchgear consisting of transformer, air vacuumed breakers and starters for hospital chillers.
  • Keep accurate records of all testing and repairs to emergency and normal power distribution systems. Passes on to other workers instructions received from the Supervisor, starts work by assigning the immediate tasks to individual members of the work group.
  • Insures needed plans, material, blueprints and tools are available from multiple locations and/or computer programs.
  • Ability to use computer software systems for work tracking and maintenance logging, and ability to utilize standard office word processing, spreadsheet software and email programs.
  • Assist the Electrical Supervisor in helping to resolve design and installation problems with Engineers, Service Administrators and contract personnel and ensure the various projects are completed in a timely manner.
  • Electrician will also assist the Electrical Supervisor in working out arrangements with other engineering maintenance shops, suppliers, contractors and private organizations and solving any problems arising from various requirements of these different companies.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Work assignments involves lifting heavy equipment such as large spools of wire, bundles of conduit, etc. Must be able to work for prolonged periods while 'kneeling, crouching, stooping and/or standing in awkward positions and must be able to climb and work from ladders, scaffolding, various hydraulic lifts and roofs.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
