Duties

Help
  • You will work as a fire control technician with responsibility for the protection of forestland used for military training activities.
  • You will provide oversight during initial and extended attack fires, direct fireline activities and tactics of dispersed firefighters, resources and equipment and assign missions to ground and aviation wildland fire suppression resources.
  • You will be responsible for maintaining and understanding a daily awareness of fire weather, fuel moisture contents, and fire danger indices, recognizing potentially hazardous situations, and providing operational briefings.
  • You will operate a wildland fire engine, function as a Strike Team Leader Heavy Equipment (STEQ) and plan and implement an aggressive prescribed burning program on approximately 15,000 acres of commercial forestland, ranges and impact areas annually.
  • You will keep the Program Manager informed of mechanical issues and repairs to heavy equipment, obtain cost estimates for repairs and ensure preventative maintenance and minor repairs are completed and accomplished in a safe manner.
  • You will maintain habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker and implement all phases of the insect and disease management program.

  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • The incumbent must obtain and maintain a U.S. Government Vehicle Operators Identification C/OF 346 for 4x4 vehicles.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to take and pass the annual Work Capacity Test (WCT) at the Moderate level or higher. The Moderate fitness level requires completing a two (2) mile hike within thirty (30) minutes, while carrying a twenty-five (25) pound pack.
  • You will be required to possess and maintain current National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) Incident Commander Type 4 (ICT4), Strike Team Leader Heavy Equipment (STEQ) and Prescribed Fire Burn Boss Type II (RXB2).
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to work fluctuating hours, overtime, and standby time during fire season and other periods of high fire danger.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • Prior wildland firefighting experience on the fireline is a mandatory requirement.

Qualifications

GS-08:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Performing work related to wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire, and the treatment of hazardous fuels.

Examples of qualifying experience include:

  • Forestry aid or technician work.
  • Engineering, range, or soil conservation technician work that involved the application of cultural, resource conservation, or land management practices on nonforest or ranch lands when combined with knowledge of forestry operations and equipment.
  • Farming or ranching work that involved application of cultural and soil and water conservation practices, including safety and use of equipment, and that provided a basic understanding of land use.
  • Forest or range fire control, prevention, or suppression work.

GS-07:
Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Assisting with performing work related to wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire, and the treatment of hazardous fuels.
