Duties

Help
  • Serve as a phlebotomist performing blood collection, both in the phlebotomy room and in the main laboratory processing areas.
  • Have direct patient contact while performing blood collection procedures using venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques and obtain capillary blood samples based on the judgment of venous access and the requirements of the test.
  • Receive and process various laboratory samples and specimens, receiving specimens from remote sites for shipment to civilian or military reference laboratories.
  • Prepare shipping manifests, ensuring the integrity of documentation, logs, and specimens following regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform accessioning procedures using automated systems such as the Composite Health Care System (CHCS), ensuring timely distributions to laboratory sections.
  • Perform clerical duties related to the handling of laboratory specimens.
  • Under the direction of a training coordinator, instruct new laboratory hires, Military Medical Laboratory Technician (Phase II) students, and various other students in procedures, practices, and techniques.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • Position is designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing blood collection procedures by venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques, preparing specimens for testing, and performing clerical duties related to handling of laboratory specimens. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

Although not required, management prefers the candidate to possess a ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certification.
