As a HEAVY MOBILE EQUIPMENT MECHANIC, WG-5803-8/10, this position is located in the Air National Guard (ANG) State Headquarters (HQ), Engineering Installation Squadron (EIS), Vehicle Maintenance Section whose mission is to engineer, install, remove, and/or perform maintenance on Command and Control, Communications, Computer and Information (C4I) systems and facilities. The primary purpose of this position is to maintain, repair, modify and inspect heavy mobility equipment as well as various types of motor vehicles and powered support equipment, both gasoline and diesel powered.
(1) Performs required repair of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment as assigned, using independent judgment and own initiative on the repair work. Performs Time Compliance Technical Orders (TCTOs) including scheduled, unscheduled and special inspections. Determines when and how far major components should be dismantled; what parts and mechanisms can be reworked, refitted, or replaced with new parts and the type, extent and alignment required, using technical orders, commercial manuals, automotive computer data base system, or local directives. Removes, rebuilds, repairs, and replaces vehicle system components. Adjusts and/or overhauls engine mechanical systems, state of the art fiber optic systems, electrical, air conditioning, fuel-air, emission control, power trains, gear reduction systems, electronic/pneumatic controlled automatic and manual transmissions, power take-offs, differentials, power dividers and computerized brakes, steering and suspension system components. Performs operational driving tests to determine serviceability of equipment.
(2) Performs body repair and corrosion control, repaints, and refinishes surfaces as required. Repairs and/or replaces body parts, locks, glass, etc., and determines if additional repairs are required. Fabricates vehicle body panels as required for repairs. Uses welding equipment, power tools, hand tools and other specialized equipment. Cleans, replaces, tests and repairs radiators/oil coolers and associated parts. Incumbent replaces or repairs tires and/or tubes and balances wheels.
(3) Diagnoses malfunctions by visual or auditory examination methods. Uses complex test equipment such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, computerized diagnostic scan tools and pressure gauges to determine exact nature or extent of repairs or adjustments necessary. Isolates malfunction by using systematic vehicle analysis. Troubleshoots, inspects, tests, analyzes and adjusts vehicle computer/electrical control systems, mechanical and hydraulic systems, lubricating, cooling, air conditioning, emission and exhaust systems, state of the art fiber optic systems, engine electrical systems, engine fuel-air systems, electronic/pneumatic controlled automatic and manual transmission, power take-offs, differentials, power dividers, power trains, computerized brakes, steering and suspension systems.
(4) Prepares, maintains and submits maintenance work orders for man-hour and data collection accounting. Records work performed or delayed and parts or maintenance required.
(5) Reviews and maintains technical orders, operating instructions, commercial publications, Major Command (MAJCOM) and local publications, automotive data base updates, as well as other pertinent directives.
(6) Establishes and maintains adequate bench and special stock support levels and appropriate tools and equipment. Uses and maintains shop equipment. Researches or assists in requisitioning materials, parts and equipment necessary to perform the vehicle maintenance management mission.
(7) Participates as On-the-Job Training (OJT) instructor in the vehicle maintenance area. Conducts instructional classes on methods and procedures of operation and maintenance concerning all aspects of vehicles and assigned shop maintenance support equipment. Evaluates effectiveness of instruction, maintains individual and section training and qualification records.
(8) Conducts the local occupational safety and health training program, to include compliance with directives and procedures for proper disposal of hazardous/contaminated waste products.
(9) Operates general and special purpose vehicles, base maintenance, materials handling equipment, and Aeronautical Ground Equipment (AGE), as required to support the unit mission.
(10) Plans and schedules tasks and training activities for drill status guard members.
(11) Performs other duties as assigned.

GENERAL and SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Work involves the maintenance, repair, and modification of heavy-duty vehicles and mobile equipment which have utility systems or special hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems, features, or controls designed for such purposes as construction, combat, earth moving, ship loading, firefighting, and comparable industrial or special applications. Examples of heavy-duty equipment includes bulldozers, road graders, crawler tractors, power shovels, locomotives, combat tanks, cranes, large missile transporters, and fire trucks. The repair of major systems (such as diesel, gasoline, multi-fuel, and turbine engines; automatic, standard, and cross-drive transmissions; heavy duty drive line systems; and hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical utility systems) is included, whether accomplished as part of or apart from repair of the total piece of heavy mobile equipment involved. Experience or training that has provided the candidate with the skill to make repairs or the ability to assist with repairs that can be accomplished by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts.
WG-08 - Must have 12 months experience or training leading to a thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment. Ability to diagnose, repair, overhaul, and modify a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment. Knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical systems that have a functional relationship and effect on the operation of mechanical systems. Knowledge of hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems and their mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic controls. Basic knowledge of electronics, sufficient to identify and replace defective components, such as sensors, diodes, and circuit boards. Ability to repair or overhaul major components such as diesel, multi-fuel or gasoline engines, turbine engines, automatic and manual transmissions, drive line assemblies, electrical and electronic systems and accessories, fuel injection systems, and emission control systems.
WG-10 - Must have 18 months experience or training leading to a thorough knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and working relationships of complex systems, assemblies, and parts for a variety of combat, tactical, commercial, special purpose vehicles, and equipment.
