Duties

Help
  • You will be in charge of the potable and non-potable water systems in accordance with established federal, state, DOD and DON regulations, procedures and instructions.
  • You will perform routine distribution system flushing, operator maintenance and accomplishes minor repairs such as replacing gaskets, bearings, piping, pump motors and packing.
  • You will be required to read meters, gauges, record dates and submit reports.
  • You will draw water samples according to the established sampling plan from pre-determined locations for total chlorine, mono-chloramine, free ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, total coliform and bacteriological content ensuring proper residual levels.
  • You will recognize and analyze malfunctions of sewage lift stations and associated conveyance systems and is responsible for taking immediate correction action and informing supervisor of the malfunction.
  • You will inspect backflow assembly installation ensuring they meet applicable plumbing codes and rules.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position is considered Key/Emergency-Essential. You will be required to provide immediate and continuing support to ensure the success of combat operations or the availability of combat-essential systems.
  • This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below:
1. Aid in the supervision of potable water treatment and distribution; 2. Maintain plant logs, laboratory records, and quality control records to document operation and maintenance of a surface water treatment plant; 3. Operate valves, high service pumps, and adjust chemical feed rates to maintain correct disinfection ratio, turbidity, pH balance, and fluoride concentration; 4. Observe readings on gauges, meters, detectors, recorders, or computer generated and analog displays to detect issues in treatment operations; and 5. Knowledge of water industry regulatory issues and responsibilities.

Additional information

Must successfully complete initial training and testing, continuous learning training and maintain a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Class C Water Distribution License, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Class II Wastewater Collection License and a Texas Commission on Environmental Quality Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester License. Must possess and maintain a state vehicle operator's license.

Frequently handles objects weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and carries objects weighing more than 50 pounds, usually with assistance. Moderate effort is required to turn valves and controls. Considerable driving to and from various locations to check equipment both on and off the installation. Occasionally climbs ladders and stairs.

Works 50% of the time indoors and 50% outdoors, often in inclement weather. Exposed to noise, rotating machinery, dirt, grease, chemicals, oils and fumes. Subject to cuts, bruises, broken bones, electrical shocks and burns. Follows safe work practices using provided safety equipment such as face shields, gloves, steel toe shoes, hearing and eye protection. Incumbent will be required to be fit tested for full face respirator.

Observes all safety precautions and wears appropriate personal protective equipment as required. Responds to hazardous material spills as required.

The selection is contingent upon a negative drug test result and thereafter the individual will be subject to testing on a random basis as an incumbent of the Testing Designated Position (TOP).

The incumbent will be assigned to a Disaster Response Team and may be required to be onboard in a working status before, during and immediately following any natural or manmade disaster. The incumbent will remain on board until relieved by the Public Works Shop Supervisor.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.
