Help

Through the utilization of inpatient/emergency department contracts, approximately 22,500 inpatient admissions and ER visits are managed by VATVCBHCS. Affiliated with the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Medical School, the system has an active ambulatory care program and serves as a teaching and training site for medical residents and a myriad of health professional trainees. The VATVCBHCS is responsible for an enrollee population of over 53,000 Veterans and >612,000 outpatient visits annually.

The duties of the Management Assistant include, but are not limited to:

  • Participates in establishing administrative policies and procedures, ensuring that
    written policies are within established federal regulations and VA written guidelines.
  • Monitors utilization, fiscal impact, challenges, and outcomes of program operations aligned
    under the Chief of Staff Office.
  • Coordinates the flow of correspondence, reports, and inquiries for the Chief of Staff Office. Investigates, completes, and coordinates replies to complaint mail and congressional inquiries.
  • Ensure proper format, mathematical correctness, and correct grammatical content of correspondence
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with coworkers, other
    services, and other administrative support staff through effective listening and interpersonal skills
  • Checks for proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and to review document for conformance with formats and procedural requirements.
  • Communicate sufficient to prepare and present findings and
    recommendations, carry out specific actions regarding controversial issues, and selling or implementing new issues and concepts.
  • Apply a wide range of methods used to gather, analyze, and evaluate information concerning management processes, draw conclusions, and recommend appropriate action.
  • Assist with travel program and travel requirements for requesting travel as an Alternate Preparer.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/12/2026.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.


You may qualify based on your experience as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:

    Effective oral and written communication, creating memoranda, emails using standard office software, presenting information

    Standard office administrative functions that involve analyzing information and making recommendations

    Experience researching and following policies and procedures
