Duties

Help
  • Serve as the Assistant Fire Chief in charge of Fire and Emergency Services Emergency Operations.
  • Participate in the planning and administration of comprehensive fire suppression, hazardous materials, specialized rescue, and emergency medical programs at installation of assignment.
  • Direct the work of firefighting crews providing fire suppression, technical rescue, hazardous material, and Chemical Biological Radiological Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) and emergency medical response calls.
  • Direct operational activities of the fire station including care and maintenance of equipment and facilities.
  • Provide program management and support for all Fire and Emergency Services operations programs.
  • Serve as the acting Fire Chief during scheduled and unscheduled absences assuming full organizational control.
  • Represent Fire Chief at senior leadership events with on and off center agencies.

Qualifications

To qualify for a Supervisory Firefighter your resume and supporting documentation must support:

A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-11 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-10 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. To qualify at the GS-10 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. For all other applicants, to qualify for the GS-10 grade level, specialized experience must be at the GS-08 grade level or equivalent in the military or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:

  • GS-11:
    • Managing fire and emergency personnel.
    • Enforcing standard operating procedures and policies related to fire and emergency services.
    • Responding and assuming overall responsibility as Incident Commander during all types of emergencies.
    • Detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards.
    • Maintaining records to track budgets, equipment, and supplies for the department.
  • GS-10:
    • Oversees fire and emergency personnel.
    • Reviews standard operating procedures and policies related to fire and emergency services.
    • Assisting an Incident Commander during all types of emergencies.
    • Detecting, reducing, or eliminating potential fire hazards.
    • Reviewing records to track budgets, equipment, and supplies for the department.
  • For GS-08 Candidates:
    • Experience leading fire and emergency personnel
    • Experience applying standard operating procedures and policies related to fire and emergency services.
    • Experience assisting higher level commander, supervisor during all type of emergencies.
    • Experience detecting, reducing or eliminating potential fire hazards.
    • Experience assisting with reviewing records to track budgets, equipment and supplies for a fire department.

SELECTIVE PLACEMENT FACTOR (SPF): Department of Defense (DoD) 6055.06-M, "Fire and Emergency Services Certification Program" identifies the level of performance required for all DoD Fire and Emergency Services personnel. The certifications listed below are the minimum mandatory certification requirements for this position. DoD Incumbents shall possess DoD Certifications, or equivalent accredited certifications from the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or the National Professional Qualifications System (Pro-Board):

Accredited Certification:
  • Fire Officer III
  • Fire Instructor II
  • Fire Inspector II
  • Hazardous Materials Incident Commander
State of (Ohio, California, Virginia, Pennsylvania) Certifications:
  • Emergency Medical Technician - Basic**
** If you do not possess a certification for the state in which you are applying, you MUST have National Registry certification and be eligible for reciprocity requirements.

Licenses:
  • Valid State Driver's License
Other training requirements that must be obtained within one year of employment and maintained:
  • Emergency Vehicle Operator, (EVOC)

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Drug-Free Workplace Policy

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is committed to maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace. All DLA employees are required to refrain from illegal drug use on and off duty. DLA conducts pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug testing.

Applicants tentatively selected for employment in testing designated positions will undergo a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
