Duties

Help

If selected for this position you will serve as a senior legal assistant responsible for directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys with a wide variety of legal assistance services. The work requires a specialized knowledge of the processes, procedures, and practices of legal assistance activities. Typical work assignments will include:

    • With a high degree of independence, prepares legal actions such as indictments, criminal complaints, search warrants, judgements, notices, affidavits, and grand jury subpoenas.
    • Acts as a legal assistance subject matter expert and provides training, guidance and technical
    • Independently processes cases and legal matters by applying a thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of the U.S. Attorney and extensive practical litigative experience
    • Assists attorneys buy searching for legal precedent in indices and computerized legal reference systems.
    • Aids in preparing and organizing evidence for production as discovery and for use in trial,
    • Assists attorneys in trial preparation by performing duties such as independently compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists
    • Maintains calendar(s) of the AUSA(s), scheduling appointments, interviews, and conferences, and provides reminders of commitments and court appearances.
    • Reviews incoming material and determines the need for correspondence and legal documents such as motions, orders, pleadings and subpoenas.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation.

  • Time-in-Grade: Federal employees must meet time-in-grade requirements within 30 days after the closing date of this announcement.

Qualifications

GS-8: To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level.
Specialized experience is defined as experience providing assistance to attorneys by preparing complaints, motions, subpoenas, orders, or other hearing and/or trial documents accurately and in proper format; verifying citations and statutory references contained in legal documents; assisting with discovery, hearing or trial preparation by performing duties such as compiling trial notebooks, assembling jury instructions, and compiling witness and exhibit lists; and using automated software to produce legal related reports and documents, including developing tables of contents and indices to briefs.

To be qualified, you must type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.)
