Summary

You will serve as one of the Assistant Field Office Managers (AFOM) of the New Orleans, Louisiana, Field Office. The field office is the largest in FGIS and is responsible for grading, weighing, and certifying all grain and related products at export port locations in the New Orleans circuit.

Duties

  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Provides technical on-the-job instructions and determines the accuracy and proficiency of Federal and licensed graders' interpretations and application of Federal standards and specific specifications.
  • Identifies, schedules, and provides training for all official personnel through officially established procedures. Ensures the training meets the Agency's requirements.
  • Directs and coordinate the operations of work units of various sizes in export locations in the Areas assigned.
  • Supervises field supervisors and employees, providing direction, feedback, and monitoring performance.
  • Uses good communication skills to coordinate effectively with the team as well as other managers in different levels of the organization.
  • Applies knowledge of the industry and Agency operations in order to come up with an overall strategy.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

TIME-IN-GRADE: Current federal employees applying for a promotion opportunity must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirement of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled.

FOR THE GS-13 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-12 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:

  • Using the official U.S. grade standards and inspection procedures for grains and other graded and processed commodities.
  • Applying the procedures, techniques, and methods required to determine the grains and commodities acceptability or grade, and skill in performing various types of inspections.
  • Utilizing supervisory and leadership techniques in order to plan, organize, and manage resources and subordinates in accordance with Agency and Departmental regulations.
Note: There is no education substitution for this grade level.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
