Duties

Help
  • Evaluates requested test procedure to determine suitability of specimen and requests and/or obtains new specimen if determined to be unusable.
  • Performs clinical laboratory tests on specimens as ordered.
  • Performs and calculates manual cell counts and properly identifies abnormal and normal blood cell populations.
  • Performs microscopic urinalysis procedures to include the proper identification of cells, crystals, casts and other urinary sediment.
  • Processes laboratory specimens for shipment to reference laboratories using acceptable laboratory procedures.
  • Conducts necessary quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) procedures.
  • Operates, calibrates, maintains and troubleshoots all blood bank, chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, and microbiology analyzers, in addition to laboratory centrifuges.
  • Performs preliminary steps for instrument setup, function verification and operation for instrumentation.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Confidential security clearance.
  • This position requires regular contact with children under the age 18 and a favorable determination of suitability to do so.
  • Must obtain and maintain a current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification from the American Heart Association or Military Training Network.
  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position may require the incumbent to work on an intermittent or unscheduled, on-call basis which may include weekends/holidays.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
  • The incumbent will be required to sign a mobility agreement as a condition of employment.
  • Required to obtain and maintain certifications as a Medical Technologist or Medical Lab Scientist from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or American Medical Technologist (AMT)

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes experience performing laboratory tests and examinations in the areas of chemistry, microbiologic, hematologic, and blood banking; operating and maintaining laboratory instruments/ equipment; and reviewing findings against established quality control values, quality assurance procedures and/or sampling or preparing reports of findings. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: Successful completion of at least one full year of undergraduate-level education that is directly related to the work of the position.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education by 18. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100% to qualify.

Licensure/Certification:

This position requires a certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologist (AMT) or other board or registry deemed comparable by Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense for Health Affairs (OASD (HA)) or their designee as a Medical Technologist (MT), Medical Lab Scientist (MLS), or Medical Lab Technician (MLT).

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
