The primary purpose of this position, NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTER, WG-3705-11, is to engage in nondestructive tester (NDT) specialties of X-ray, Ultrasonic, Eddy Current, Liquid Penetrant, and Magnetic Particle inspections and provide 2-D and 3-D cross-sectional radiography images of rocket motors and a variety of other ordnance items to support the missile maintenance Mission.

Duties

Help

1. Use highly sophisticated and complex inspection equipment such as the 15 MEV Varian K-15 Linatron, the 15 MEV M-9 Linatron in the field of computed tomography and micro-focus computed tomography.
2. Nondestructive Inspection (NDI) technicians perform tests to determine serviceability of complex construction aircraft and aerospace components.
3. Use radiographic equipment to perform inspections of aircraft, engine, missile, ground support equipment, etc., parts, components, support equipment-structural members, components, parts, and other materials for which inspection procedures and/or acceptability standards are inadequate or not available.
4. Use Fluorescent Penetrant and/or Fluorescent Penetrant processes, to perform inspections of aircraft, engine, missile, or other aerospace parts and components, support equipment-structural members, components, parts, and other materials for which inspection procedures and/or acceptability standards are inadequate or not available.
5. Use Ultrasonic-eddy current processes, to perform inspections of aircraft, engine, missile, or other aerospace parts and components, support equipment-structural members, components, parts, and other materials for which inspection procedures and/or acceptability standards are inadequate or not available.
6. Use Fluorescent Magnetic Particle and/or Fluorescent Magnetic Particle processes to perform inspections of aircraft, engine, missile, or other aerospace parts and components, support equipment-structural members, components, parts, and other materials for which inspection procedures and/or acceptability standards are inadequate or not available.
7. Serve as NDI Technical Advisor, to advise responsible shop supervisors, engineers, quality assurance specialists and other related functions of defects found, their extent and effect of the quality and serviceability of the product.
8. Utilize safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations to maintain a safe and clean work environment.

  • May be required to work overtime, rotating shifts, uncommon tours, and weekends etc.
  • Employee may be required to participate in a Rapid Response Team that includes movement from one product group to another and may also require different shift work.
  • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver's license is required.

  • Incumbent attends and participates in classroom training courses and accomplishes proficiency quizzes and tests to ensure they are proficient and qualified to the journeyman level. Final certification is approved by certified Level III personnel.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-3700 Metal Processing Group Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

The screen out element for this position is: The ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Prolonged standing, frequent lifting of parts and materials weighing Prolonged standing, frequent lifting of parts and materials weighing up to 25 pounds with assistance or use of lifting devices or other workers is required. Subject to eyestrain when using black light. Both hands and good eyesight required. Work requires stooping, bending, reaching, stretching, and climbing in, on, or through aircraft with equipment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Works inside shop and travels to other buildings across installation. Exposed to oils, which may cause dermatitis or allergy. Subject to possible radiation damage of body tissues. Wears radiation monitoring devices, standard safety equipment, and protective clothing.

Additional information

Hill Air Force Base provides worldwide engineering and logistics management for the F-16 Fighting Falcon, A-10 Thunderbolt II, and the Minuteman III ICBM, and performs depot maintenance of the F-16, A-10, and C-130 Hercules aircraft. The base is located between Ogden and Salt Lake City. The area is known for year round activities, including skiing, hiking, boating, extreme sports, fishing and hunting, with four distinct seasons, low humidity and moderate snow fall in the valley.
