This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service

Duties

Help
  • Travel in government vehicle, set up, and participate in local blood drives as needed.
  • Register donors manually or by computer
  • Perform personal interviews to obtain medical histories and visual inspections of blood donors.
  • Screen subjects (volunteer blood donors, autologous, and therapeutic patients) donating blood and exercises care to ensure that their blood is safe for use prior to donation.
  • Take vital signs (i.e. temperature, pulse, and blood pressure), and checks hemoglobin and/or hematocrit level ensuring that prospective donors are eligible to donate blood.
  • Issue donor collection kits.
  • Perform allogeneic, autologous and therapeutic whole blood collection procedures to include the scheduling and collection of directed whole blood and apheresis procedures
  • Evaluate and select potential blood donors for autologous and allogeneic whole blood collections by applying medical and regulatory screening criteria.
  • Monitor donor during donation process, observe for, and treat possible donor adverse reaction (i.e. light headache, passing out, convulsing, etc.).
  • Strip segments, weighs, centrifuges, creates blood and apheresis components ,and stores
  • Prepare donor samples and whole blood shipping documents to be sent to testing laboratory.
  • Transport blood and blood components in government vehicle.
  • Input all data on the blood products in the computer. Review documents, create and print reports to ensure proper release and inventory of products.

  • This position has been designated "Mission Essential". In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 75% of the time.
  • This position requires Basic Life Support training certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion
  • Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination. A candidate tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to annual seasonal influenza vaccination
  • This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations.Rotating shift possible (no on-call shift). Possibility of 10 hour, 4-day work week (Mon-TH or Tu-Fr 0700 – 1730)

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the Education and or Expereince requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes labeling units for shipment and/or storage; explaining the phlebotomy procedures to the donor; taking vital signs (i.e. temperature, pulse, and blood pressure); and recording information such as start and stop times of blood draws. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR

Education: Four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree, with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, such as, Chemistry, Biology, Microbiology, Hematology Laboratory Science.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
