Summary

Position serves as Laundry Worker Supervisor in the Laundry Section of Environmental Management Service (EMS) at the New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS). The Laundry section operates seven days per week and the primary purpose of this section is to process approximately1.6 million pounds of laundry for approximately 310 authorized beds and for the Amarillo VAHCS.

Help

Duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Oversee and operate battery operated and electrical equipment.
  • Maintain appropriate supply and equipment chemical levels and to timely arrange maintenance, repair, and replacement schedules for EMS equipment.
  • Ability to operate the lift and rail system to correctly direct the clean/soiled linens to proper staging rail.
  • Ability to operate various finishing equipment: flat-work ironing system, garment finisher, and small piece folders.
  • Maintains balanced workload throughout the section by shifting assignments, workers and other resources to achieve the most effective, efficient work operation.
  • Develops and conducts training for inexperienced staff, provides and arranges for special training, and assures competencies for specific duties and requirements for laundry workers.
  • Skill and knowledge to supervise, plan, train, and administer all elements of the Laundry Service program ensuring cleanliness of textiles, and personnel management for all areas of Laundry.
  • Knowledgeable on various hand folding techniques to process textiles not folded by machinery.
  • Inspects the quality of work to ensure it meets or exceeds facility standards; assures corrections are completed and staff performance is documented timely.
  • Plans with Laundry Operations Specialist for short term, project, and long-term staffing of the laundry workers under his/her supervision to assure work requirements are performed to maximize effectiveness, safety, teamwork, and customer service.
  • Reviews and analyzes the accomplishments of the section to evaluate cost and efficiency to avoid potential problems and to recommend corrective actions.
  • Provide customers with consistent information according to established policies and procedures. Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively and appropriately.
  • Analyzes new and ongoing facility-wide programs and services to assure EMS staffing, supplies, and equipment enable effective response to programs or emergency situations.
  • Special knowledge required for knowing about textiles in patient critical care areas such as the emergency room, intensive care units, operating room suites; for acute care patient, occupied areas such as surgical, medical, behavioral health, infusion, endoscopy and community living centers; for clinical support areas, including radiology, lab, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, etc. and for outpatient clinics and administrative areas.
  • Ability to select the proper wash formulas on each machine for various types of textiles and uniforms being processed.
  • Knowledge of location and proper handling of hazardous materials, and pharmaceuticals; managing work in, or near locked units.
  • Determines the supplies, tools, and equipment necessary to perform the environmental management duties, including stringent infection control requirements, ergonomic considerations, compatibility and appropriate personal protective equipment, and emergency supplies.
  • Provides training and evaluation of Infection Control for critical care, acute care, clinical support, outpatient clinic, and administrative areas; includes time-sensitive responsiveness to multi-drug-resistant organisms such as VRE, MRSA, and C-diff; responsiveness to respiratory sensitivities, standard, special, and airborne precautions to protect employees and patients from spread of germs or contagious diseases.
  • Ability to lift, up to fifty (50) pounds and stand and walk consistently, perform light to moderate bending and stooping, and climb ladders to clean overhead equipment and furnishings and operate heavy duty commercial laundry equipment that requires eye, hand and body coordination.
  • Knowledge to perform all work in a safe and prudent manner so as not to injure self, other employees or patients.

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Physical Requirements:
Incumbent uses moderate to heavy physical effort in accomplishing the duties of this position. Duties may require constant physical demands such as walking, standing, stooping, bending, pulling, pushing, lifting, carrying, kneeling and climbing. Work requires pulling, reaching over and lifting supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Position routinely requires that the individual oversee and operate battery operated and electrical equipment. Incumbent may be required to lift up to fifty (50) pounds and must be able to stand and walk consistently, perform light to moderate bending and stooping, and climb ladders to clean overhead equipment and furnishings and operate heavy duty commercial laundry equipment that requires eye, hand and body coordination.

Working Conditions:
Incumbent normally works in a controlled environment with regulated heat, light and ventilation. He/she is exposed to organic materials such as blood, infectious organisms and disagreeable odors. The incumbent is required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and/or safety gear. The Individual is possibly exposed to contagions from the handling of contaminated and regulated medical waste. Potential exists for sharps exposure in dirty soiled linens stream. Incumbent is subject to cuts, scrapes, bumps, bruises, slips, falls and other injuries, and to disagreeable odors in the performance of required duties. This position may be assigned holidays, irregular tours including weekends as necessary in support of Veteran Centered Care. This position will on occasion be asked to work extended hours for coverage as necessary in support of Veteran Centered Care.

Receiving Service Credit for Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
