Duties

Help
  • You will perform traditional nondestructive inspection of castings, forgings, machined parts, test plates, welds, metal cladding, pipes, bar stock, flat metal sheets, airframe and engine assemblies.
  • You will calibrate and operate traditional test equipment such as eddy current testing equipment, magnetic particle testing equipment, penetrant testing equipment, visual testing equipment and temper etch equipment.
  • You will inspect parts for flaws or defects, discontinuities in patterns, interpret indications and document flaws or defects in material and prepare reports on defective parts.
  • You will work with subordinate inspectors to set the pace and demonstrate proper inspection methods.

  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain required certification and/ or license as a condition of employment
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to pass level II certification exams and maintain level II certification.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job.

The Screen-out Element for this position is ABILITY TO DO THE WORK OF A NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING MECHANIC INSPECTOR WG-3705-10 without more than normal supervision such as:

  • Performing traditional nondestructive inspection of castings, forgings, machined parts, test plates, welds, metal cladding, pipes, bar stock, flat metal sheets, airframe and engine assemblies utilizing NDI test equipment and chemicals applicable to the total range of nondestructive examination methods;
  • Encapsulating systematic and proactive measures to ensure quality assurance & quality control means are carried out as needed, (i.e., the parts and/or assemblies are examined as they are inducted into the facility to determine the existence of flaws or defects. The parts and/or assemblies are examined again after one or more steps of rework to determine if the unit still meets specifications);
  • Reading and interpreting specifications, sketches, blueprints, technical directives, manuals and shop orders to interpret and/or develop information on products to be tested and examined; AND
  • Calibrating and setting up nondestructive testing equipment, components or assemblies to produce the optimum results desired for the examinations.

This position requires heavy lifting over 40 pounds and carrying of objects up to 40 pounds. Any weight to be
lifted in excess of 40 pounds will not be attempted unaided.

This position requires exposure to high noise levels.

This position requires irregular hours or rotating shifts.

You will be required to comply with Tool Control Program.

This position requires corrected vision as eye strain may occur from prolonged work on small parts, near
vision correctable at 14" to Jaeger 2 and far vision correctable to 20/20 in one eye. Incumbent must be
able to distinguish color.

Military Spouse Preference applicants will receive priority consideration at the Full Performance Level (FPL) and if determined to be Best Qualified at the FPL, and selected, must be placed at the FPL. A BQ military spouse possesses knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies comparable to others who meet the competitive referral criteria for the specific position.

PPP applicants will be placed at the FPL, if determined Well Qualified (WQ). To receive priority consideration, the FPL must be the same grade level or equivalent of the retained grade or the grade held immediately prior to separation.

Preference applicants will be placed at the highest grade for which they have applied and are determined Best Qualified (BQ). A BQ military spouse possesses knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies comparable to others who meet the competitive referral criteria for the specific position.
