Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoD 6055.06M to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
As a "Key" position, the incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.
This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis; 48-hour rotating shifts with a work schedule of 144 hours per pay period.
Must obtain licenses (Military as well as a North Carolina Class B, Non-CDL License) within 60 days of hire. Failure to do so will subject employee to termination.
Employee is required to participate in a physical fitness program as described by DOD and NFPA standards.
Position is designated inclement weather essential.
This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
Incumbent must obtain and maintain United States Coast Guard Master’s license covering the tonnage of Fireboat within 18 months of appointment.
Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
Qualifications

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental fire department or brigade; (2) rescue operations; (3) detection, reduction, or elimination of potential fire hazards; (4) operation of fire communications equipment; (5) controlling hazardous materials incidents; and/or (6) developing, implementing, or providing training in fire protection and prevention. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).
Additional Qualification Requirements: In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess:
Firefighter 1 & 2 Certification;
Driver Operator Pumper Certification;
Hazmat Technician Certification;
Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) (National or State) Certification.
Firefighter certificates must be certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification must be issued by State or National Registry (NREMT).
Education
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
