Duties

Help
  • Monitor range allotments for compliance with permit conditions under direct supervision.
  • Assist with identifying and documenting common plant species.
  • Perform basic range management procedures and duties.
  • Work in potentially rugged conditions under direct supervision.
  • Operate 4WD vehicles and navigate using standard methods and equipment.
  • Assist with the maintenance of range improvements using commonly used methods, tools, and equipment.
  • Collect field data, enter information into computer applications, and assist in developing basic reports and maps.
  • Work as part of a team on a daily basis.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

For GS-3
You must possess 6 months of general experience in any type of work that demonstrated the ability to perform the of a Range Aid, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Examples of general experience include any type of work that demonstrates your ability to perform the work of the position or provided a familiarity with working outdoors, with hand tools, and/or operating vehicles.

Education: Successful completion of 1 year of study that included at least 6 semester hours in a combination of courses such as range management or conservation, agriculture, forestry, wildlife management, engineering, biology, mathematics, or other natural or physical sciences.(Transcripts Required)

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.

For GS-4
You must possess 6 months of General Experience and 6 months of Specialized experience. Applicants who have 1 year of appropriate specialized experience, as indicated below, are not required to have general experience.
General Experience includes: (l) Any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position or provided a familiarity with working outdoors, with hand tools, and/or operating vehicles, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:

  • Work in the conservation, regulation, and use of public or Federally controlled lands for grazing.
  • Range research activities.
  • Work in the operation of a livestock ranch or in assisting in the management or preservation of lands comparable to the public range; and/or
  • Range or forest fire control, prevention, or suppression work.

Education: Successful completion of 2 years of study that included at least 12 semester hours in any combination of courses such as forestry, agriculture, crop or plant science, range management or conservation, wildlife management, watershed management, soil science, natural resources (except marine fisheries and oceanography), outdoor recreation management, civil or forest engineering, or wildland fire science. No more than 3 semester hours in mathematics is credit-able. (Transcripts Required)

Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, riding, stooping, bending, and lifting.

Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air-conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough terrain, insects, snakes, and other hazards are common. The incumbent carefully adheres to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.
