This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

Help
  • Serve as Medical Records Technician (MRT), functioning primarily as an inpatient/ outpatient records coder.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and requirements in utilizing the International Code of Diseases-10 Clinical Modifications (ICD-10-CM), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).
  • Assign specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
  • Use specialized procedures and methods to correct and amend records.
  • Code complicated medical records having diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic procedures on specific DRGs that are identified as difficult to classify.
  • Identify and document any incident which may denote a potential compensatory event or questionable breach of quality of care delivered.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • One year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • Position is Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations (natural or man-made disaster) the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Identifying the correct medical code for procedures that comply with regulatory requirements; interpreting provider documentation, operative reports, diagnostic results, or multidisciplinary notes to select correct coding; auditing patient records to ensure records are complete and accurate. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
