Duties

Help
  • Determines the utilization of firefighters and equipment for combating hazardous material (HAZ/MAT) incidents, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) incidents.
  • Serve as Company Officer for Fire Stations, with the responsibility for structural firefighting and rescue operations for hundreds of buildings.
  • Takes immediate action to rescue persons trapped in the burning area, to effectively bring fire under control, and to extinguish it.
  • Directs placement of equipment, personnel, application of fire extinguishing agents and rescue of personnel.

  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance or access for the duration of employment.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. or more in the regular performance of duties.
  • The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position requires successful completion of an annual Job Performance Test.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.
  • This position requires the employee to work under adverse environmental conditions.
  • Employee is required to report for duty during Natural Disasters and other emergency situations as directed by the Fire Chief.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) controlling emergencies and hazardous situations (2) performing firefighting tasks of a highly hazardous nature (3) engaging in airfield crash-rescue, structural firefighting (4) following procedures and techniques of fire department operations. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Required Firefighter Certifications: In addition to meeting the specialized experience requirement above, applicants must also possess Airport Firefighter, Fire Instructor I, Fire Inspector I, HAZ/MAT Technician and Incident commander, Fire Officer II and EMT certified through DoD Fire and Emergency Services Certification System, International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC), or the Fire Service Professional Qualifications System (PRO-Board) in accordance with DoD 6055.06-M.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
