This announcement is to fill this excepted service position under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act (ANILCA) hiring authority, Public Law 96-487. You must have lived or worked in or near the geographic boundaries of the Tongass National Forest and have special knowledge or expertise concerning the cultural and/or natural resources of the Southeast Alaska area to meet eligibility requirements.

Duties

Help
  • Provides visitor services for the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center .
  • Serves as a primary point of contact for the public, providing information, managing visitor flow, handling sales and permits, and assisting with administrative and safety tasks.
  • Greets visitors and responds to a variety of inquiries regarding Forest Service activities, programs, exhibits, facilities, policies, and functions.
  • Evaluates inquiries in order to provide the most useful and appropriate information or to suggest other options, such as alternate routes or activities.
  • rovides guidance to the public on rules and regulations regarding on-unit activities and attempts to gain public cooperation in protecting resources from damage and pollution.
  • Serves as Collection Officer to sell forest timber permits and other items, such as maps and passes, in accordance with manual and handbook requirements.
  • Is held responsible for submitting and accounting for collected monies using approved computer programs and records.
  • Visitor services include: preventative safety messaging for local hazards such as bears, other wildlife, hazardous weather and trail conditions; and incident response for first aid accidents.
  • Other duties as assigned.

You must meet the ANILCA eligibility requirements to be referred for this position.

Eligibility Requirements: You must have lived and or worked in or near the geographic boundaries of the Tongass National Forest and have special knowledge or expertise concerning the natural and cultural resources in the Southeast Alaska area to participate in visitor information activities.

Additional information

This position is temporary, has a Not-to-Exceed date that may be extended without further competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or lack of funds.

The salary amount will be adjusted to include a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA). A gradually reducing COLA will continue to be paid after December 31, 2012. COLA will not be eliminated until 65% of the locality pay equals the frozen COLA rate. See the OPM website at: http://www.opm.gov/oca/cola/index.asp for additional information.

The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs.

If you are retired from the Federal Government and are selected for this vacancy, your retirement annuity may be offset from your pay.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND FINGERPRINT CHECK: Selection and retention in this position is contingent on a successfully adjudicated FBI National Criminal History Check (fingerprint check) and a background investigation.
