Duties

Help
  • Utilize hospital automated patient health record related software such as, the Military Health System (MHS) GENESIS to retrieve various reports and input data.
  • Serve as Medical Records Technician (MRT), functioning primarily as an inpatient/ outpatient records coder.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and third-party insurance requirements in utilizing the International Code of Diseases-10 Clinical Modifications (ICD-10-CM), and Procedure Coding System (PCS) coding books.
  • Assign specific codes to medical records, sequencing and determining codes to accurately reflect the resources and procedures used in the care of the patients.
  • Use specialized procedures and methods to correct and amend records.
  • Code complicated medical records having diagnostic, surgical and therapeutic procedures on specific DRGs that are identified as difficult to classify.
  • Identify and document any incident which may denote a potential compensatory event or questionable breach of quality of care delivered.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing technical support duties related to processing, reviewing, and maintaining medical records to ensure accuracy, completeness; validating health data for statistical, administrative, and reporting purposes; using automated coding tools and references to support accurate record review and documentation; validating health data for statistical, administrative, and reporting purposes.

Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Medical transcriptionist, Health information, and Healthcare IT specialist .
