Duties

Help
  • Serve as the Assistant Fire Chief for the Fire Department.
  • Serve as a technical advisor to management on all matters relating to Fire protection and prevention programs.
  • Develop and implement training, administration, budget, and equipment procurement for assigned programs.
  • Ensure station is properly staffed with personnel who are trained and certified.
  • Maintains management internal control systems.
  • Supervisory authority for a fire company that consists of approximately 12 crew, plus responsibility of EMS ambulance crew.
  • Performs regular inspections of fire stations to ensure they are clean, orderly, and operated according to established policies.
  • Identifies training and developmental needs of subordinates and ensures required level of licensing and certifications are met.
  • Establishes work plans, sets priorities and manages schedules for efficient work completion.
  • Reviews departmental budget and assists Fire Chief in determining needs for fire, medical and HAZMAT equipment.
  • Established performance standards and reviews requirements with crew members.
  • Conducts periodic meetings with supervised staff to review management goals, policies, and procedural changes in support of the organization and mission.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of pre-employment and periodic subsequent medical examination in accordance with DoDM 6055.06 to ensure continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
  • In accordance with AR 690-11, this position has been designated as "Key" and shall not be vacated during a national emergency or mobilization as doing so would seriously impair the capability of the organization to function effectively.
  • As a "Key" position, the incumbent must be exempted from recall to active duty and will receive training to ensure mission accomplishment of sustaining base operations during mobilization.
  • This position requires the incumbent to wear the prescribed uniform and/or personal protective equipment while on duty.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
  • This position requires the incumbent to conform to the requirements set-forth in the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1500, Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Program.
  • This position requires participation in a cardiovascular physical fitness program.
  • This position requires a 72-hour weekly tour of duty and may be required to work overtime, nights, weekends and holidays.
  • This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations unless exempted for medical or administrative reasons in accordance with Army Regulation 40-562.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes which includes 1) Leading crew in firefighting activities, such as HAZMAT incidents, fire, rescue and medical emergency operations; and 2) Experience coordinating developmental and training needs of subordinate firefighters. 3) Manage operational schedules of each shift to ensure adequate coverage. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires you to possess and maintain at the time of application the following: DoD, ProBoard, or IFSAC Firefighter Certification levels: Fire Officer II, Fire Inspector I, Fire Instructor I, HAZMAT Materials Incident Commander, DoD Airport Firefighter.

This position requires you to possess and maintain Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Certification issued by the State of Michigan or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (NREMT-B).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone -- no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
