About the position: The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a lifeguard, swim instructor, and program support staff member, responsible for preventing accidents, responding to emergencies, teching swim lessons, and assisting with the delivery of additional aquatic-based programming to promote a safe and engaging aquatic environment at the 35 FSS Himberg Pool, Misawa, Japan.

Duties

Help

  • Continuously observes swimming area to ensure safety of patrons.
  • Explains and enforces safety rules, pool regulations, and water safety policies.
  • Checks the safety of the swimming area and patron use area to include pool deck and/or beach front area.
  • Ensures the swimming area is open to patrons at scheduled times and only authorized persons are admitted to the area.
  • Rescues swimmers in danger, promptly administers first aid to injured swimmers, and calls for medical assistance (if and when needed).
  • Warns swimmers of unsafe environmental or health conditions, ocean conditions of rough water or hazards, and recommends closing swimming areas until safe conditions prevail.
  • When working at pools, may operate water pumps and control chemical additives to ensure pool water meets specified standards.
  • Teaches group and individual swim lessons in accordance with approved curriculum and safety guidelines; assists with planning, organizing, and conducting aquatic programs such as special events and youth aquatic activities.
  • May perform other related or incidental duties as assigned for the daily operation of the swimming area to include:
    • cleaning of bath houses,
    • wading pools,
    • main pools,
    • pool decks,
    • beach areas,
    • sunbathing areas, etc.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and 35FW Down Days and holidays.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Qualifying Experience:
  • Must have an approved and current nationally recognized certification in lifesaving and water rescue methods and skills, as well as training in first-aid and CPR for the professional rescuer.
  • Must have experience which provides a practical knowledge of swimming activities, rules and procedures and skill in the use and maintenance of various pool and safety equipment is desirable.
Condition(s) of Employment:
  • Satisfactory completion of installation records checks, state and national criminal background checks may be required for positions that provide lifesaving duties for children. Successful completion and favorable adjudication of applicable background investigation (Tier 1 Level) is required.
  • Must be able to maintain an appropriate physical fitness level that enables the individual to successfully engage in life-saving rescues throughout the time of their employment.
  • Must be willing and able to become a certified swim instructor within specified time from date hire or assignment to position.
  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and 35 FW Down Days and holidays.
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must be able to complete a pre-employment physical.

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. This position does not allow for education substitution in order to qualify.
