Help

The General Dentistry Dental officer shall be proficient in all aspects of general dentistry including the ability to perform selected specialty services. Skills should include but are not limited to restoration of dental caries and dental fractures, crown and bridge, including dental implant supported crowns and bridges, dentures, partial dentures, relines, occlusal guards, splints, sleep appliances, periodontal treatment.

Specifically, the provider should possess the expertise and competency to perform the following:

*Privileges will be reviewed for renewal every two years or when new privileges are requested.
*Initial granting of privileges will be based on previous credentials, training and clinical experience and subject to focused professional performance evaluation (FPPE).
*Subsequent renewal of privileges will be subject to ongoing professional performance evaluation (OPPE) outcomes and satisfaction of required criteria, such as maintaining licensure, Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and continuing professional education.
*The Dentist will provide direct patient care in both an inpatient and outpatient setting to veterans with varying degrees of acute and chronic medical conditions and/or levels of compromised health.
*The Dentist will serve as a consultant to other healthcare providers.
*The Dentist will diagnose and treat oral and dental of disease, lesions, and anomalies of the teeth, alveolar processes, gums, jaws, and associated structures.
*Diagnosis or treatment may include the use of drugs, anesthetic agents, and physical and radiographic evaluation, diagnostic procedures, restorative dentistry procedures and routine procedures within the areas of prosthodontics, periodontics, endodontics, and oral surgery.
*The Dentist will adhere to the Bylaws of the Salisbury VAMC Medical Staff.
*The Dentist shall be assigned to the Dental Service and shall report to and be immediately subordinate to the Chief of Dental Service. *The Dentist shall supervise his or her dental assistant(s), dental laboratory technician and dental hygienist in matters of direct veteran patient care and will otherwise function as an equal member within the larger team of providers and support staff.
*The Dentist may be assigned intra-departmental education and administrative duties as well as extra-clinical facility administrative or managerial responsibilities through participation in clinical, educational and administrative committees, task groups or special projects.

CLINICAL PRIVILEGES:
General Dentistry Core Privileges General Dentistry is the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, lesions, and anomalies of the teeth, alveolar processes, gums, jaws, and associated structures.
Diagnosis or treatment may include all necessary related procedures as well as the use of drugs, anesthetic agents, and physical and radiographic evaluation. And other privileges assigned.

General Dentistry Core Privileges include:
-Prescription and injection or oral administration of medications including antimicrobials, analgesics, preventive medicaments, local anesthetics.
-Restoration of dental caries and dental fractures.
-Fixed prosthodontic restorations (crown and bridge), including dental implant supported crowns and bridges.
-Endodontic (root canal) non-surgical treatment, filling and post and/or core placement for restoration.
-Oral surgery including biopsy, extraction, osteoplasty, soft tissue alveoloplasty, placement of single, root-form endosseous dental implants.
-Periodontal treatment including scaling/root planing, gingival and periodontal flap surgery.
-Removable prosthodontic treatment including dentures, partial dentures, relines, occlusal guards, splints, sleep appliances.ยท
*The Dentist must maintain his or her professional qualifications, participate in customer service training, computer training, and attend to mandated medical center training, including BLS.
And all Other Duties Assigned by the Service Line Chief.

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Dentist Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • A degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are (1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation(CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. ~AND~
  • Completed, or you are currently completing, a residency program in general practice or specialty, or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients. ~AND~
  • Currently hold, or will hold, a current, full and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Note: Dentists must maintain current registration in the State of licensure if this is a requirement for continuing active, current licensure.
Preferred Experience: Experience with crown and bridge work, simple extractions, full and partial dentures

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires mostly periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients/residents who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on stakeholder needs.

Education

Education: Degree of doctor of dental surgery or dental medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:

(1) United States and Canadian schools of dentistry listed by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA), in the list published for the year in which the course of study was completed.
(2) Schools (including foreign schools) accepted by the licensing body of a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico), or the District of Columbia as qualifying for full and unrestricted licensure provided the licensure requirements include a written examination measuring science achievement and a performance examination measuring clinical competence.

NOTE: The Under Secretary for Health or designee in Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a graduate of a school of dentistry not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research or academic position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area. (Also see paragraph 2d(4) below on waiver of licensure provisions.) The Under Secretary for Health or designee may also approve the appointment of a graduate of a school of dentistry not covered above as a resident under 38 U.S.C. 7406.
