Major Duties: This is not an all-inclusive list

As a MOBILE EQUIPMENT METAL MECHANIC (TITLE 32), WG-3809-10, you will:

  • Disassembles damaged mobile equipment bodies and components to determine nature and extent of damage and required repairs.
  • Performs repair work on damaged equipment components such as fenders, panels, hoods, cowls, truck beds and associated parts such as brackets, covers, clamps, and braces. Repairs bodies by mending, replacing, or fabricating with sheet metals.
  • Repairs damaged mainframes and structural components such as door posts, door frames, skeletal frame work and main support
    members.
  • Determines location for installing particular types of hydraulic jacks, metal knees, hooks, chains, and brackets in order to facilitate repairs of damaged vehicle frames.
  • Correctly installs frame aligning tools in order to measure amount of frame twist, sag, sway, and diamond.
  • Operates high pressure hydraulic pump in order to raise, lower, and move straitening press.
  • Uses metal working equipment to cut, bend, form or shape irregular curves, angles, and pitch in fabricating or modifying components. Fabricates, assembles, and installs a variety of components made of sheet metal for buses, trailers, shelters, and other equipment.
  • Assembles and fastens fabricated parts by installing bolts, rivets, screws, soldering, and welding.
  • Removes and replaces damaged fenders, quarter panels, and top panels by cutting and welding with oxyacetylene and electric arc welding equipment.
  • Applies knowledge of the properties and behavior of light sheet metal to control and prevent warping and distortion while welding.
  • Removes and replaces broken windshields and door glasses.
  • Lays out, orders, cuts material, and fits glass to frames "sing cutters, lubricants, and holding brackets to assemble windshield and door glass frames.
  • Repairs engine cooling systems, (Radiators) and air conditioning heat exchanger systems.
  • Determines types of repairs needed on cooling fins, tubes, necks, tanks and drains, to determine serviceability or repairability of cooling radiators.
  • Occasionally performs electrical repair work such as removing, splicing, insulating, soldering, and replacing cut or defective wiring on mobile equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MILITARY REQUIREMENTS:

Compatible military grade and assignment required prior to the effective date of placement. This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the employing state's National Guard. Applicants who are not currently a member of the National Guard must be eligible for immediate membership. Military Rank: Enlisted or Warrant Officer

  • National Guard Membership is required.
  • Males born after 31 December 1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Pending analysis, you may be required to complete a new 1-year probationary period when moved to this position IAW CNGBI 1400.25
  • For positions requiring the operation of motor vehicles, candidates must have a valid state driver's license.
  • Participation in direct deposit is mandatory.
  • Medical screening will be completed upon selection for hire.
  • Soldiers who accept a technician position may be terminated from the Bonus and Student Loan Repayment Program (SLRP).

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain the appropriate security clearance of the position.

Qualifications

GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Experience or training which demonstrates the ability to use common hand tools and make repetitive repairs. Must have basic knowledge of the type of work performed by the occupational series. Provide assistance to the journeyman by performing the simpler and routine duties of the trade.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
Have experience or training which has provided knowledge of mobile equipment construction and how all components and parts are installed and determine the total extent of damage and repair alternatives. Experience in the use of gas, arc, and welding equipment to cut out damaged or deteriorated areas, remove rusted nuts and bolts, strengthen brackets and braces, weld simple cuts and breaks, and apply heat to bend, reshape damaged areas. Experience in the use of trade equipment. Experience applying body filler to build up depressed areas, and the skill to smooth by grinding and sanding, until the contour is uniform with the adjoining areas. Experience applying primers paint with brush or spray gun, gravity feed and HVLP (high volume low pressure) equipment. Experience in mathematical calculations and scribe patterns in the fabrication of wood or metal parts having straight lines or irregular curves.
