Duties

Help

  • Performs technical attorney duties. Communicates the organization's strategic plan, mission, vision, and values and integrates the strategies, goals, objectives, work plans, products, and services. Reports on and assigns projects and responsibilities to section team members and establishes timelines and deadlines for completion of the work.
  • Serves as the principal labor and employment law attorney, servicing Maxwell AFB and all tenant units. Advises on broad and sometimes complex litigation involving potentially multi-million dollar liability, and legal factual issues arising in the areas of equal employment opportunity, labor management relations and law and related matters such as adverse actions, removals; unemployment and workers compensation claims, unfair labor practices grievances/arbitration /mediation, employment discrimination, labor negotiations and negotiability disputes.
  • As the principle environmental law attorney, reviews, coordinates, and advises on legal matters relating to environmental law issues of varying complexities. Develops negotiation strategies with federal, state and local officials to resolve complex environmental issues and cases that do not lend themselves to a unilateral solution, such as removal and disposal of toxic waste. Outcome of negotiations impacts programmed construction and operational mission of the installation.
  • Serves as the installation's principal contract law attorney providing compete legal review and litigation support on contracts, contractual procedures, and contractual documents which range from purchase orders to complex multimillion dollar contracts. Contracts are reviewed for compliance with Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), other applicable federal statues, DOD, AF, ACC and acquisition regulations and policies, and state and local requirements to include fiscal and utility law matters.
  • Serves as general legal counsel, providing advice and counsel to US activity duty and retired military personnel and their dependents regarding personal legal problems encompassing the entire field of general law, such as marriage, divorce, adoption, income tax, property transactions, contracts, Wills and estates, etc.

  • Attorney appointments are subject to serve a one-year probationary period.
  • Candidates are not required to have active duty service or veterans’ preference to be referred and considered. All qualified candidates who meet the recruitment assessment criteria will be referred to the selecting official.
  • Must be a fully qualified attorney and a member in good standing of the bar of any state or the District of Columbia.

Qualifications

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • You MUST have successfully completed a full course of study in a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) and have the first professional law degree (LLB or JD).
  • In addition, at the time of application, you must provide proof, dated within four months of application, of "active" status with a bar of the highest court of a State, U.S. commonwealth, U.S. territory, or the District of Columbia. On-line information is allowed as long as it shows that you are in "active" status.

Specialized Experience: In addition to the basic requirement, you must have professional legal experience in excess of two (2) years that commensurate with the position's duties and responsibilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

l. Thorough knowledge of a professional general attorney with capability of making precedent setting decisions for the organization.

2. Thorough knowledge of federal and state administrative and general law, military law, environmental law, labor law, and contract law with familiarity in federal and state legislative and rule making processes.

3. Ability to express sound, reasoned decisions effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to plan, organize, and meet deadlines. Ability to confer with headquarters as well as federal and 'state attorneys and other officials outside DOD.

4. Skill in providing staff advisory, planning, and reviewing services on specific environmental problems. Skill in legal research, to include computerized and internet databases.

5. Knowledge of the ethical standards of the American Bar Association and standards of conduct for Air Force attorneys.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.

VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Must be a graduate of a law school accredited by the American Bar Association, and be currently licensed as an attorney, in active (or equivalent) status and in good standing, with the bar of a U.S. state, territory, or commonwealth. The attorney must maintain such bar membership in at least one jurisdiction during the entire course of employment with the Air Force.
