Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supports Principal Investigators (PI) with research projects to peer review processes and executes and completes such projects that are successfully approved and funded.
  • Provides multidisciplinary assistance and support staff involving clinical investigation, biostatistics, mathematics, data processing, and health science.
  • Monitors quality of data and procedures, assures human subjects rights are protected, and ensures animal compliance is appropriate.
  • Provides expertise in operations research, information systems and computer modeling for the Field Program's projects.
  • Provides support to clinical and administrative staff in the VA to identify issues of operational significance which are subject to investigation and potential resolution.
  • Participates in the planning (content) and delivery of educational/informational for research workshops/seminars for the purpose of informing, educating, and stimulating others concerning research.
  • Prepares and submits, both independently and in collaboration with other scientists, research findings via publications in scholarly journals and presentations at professional meetings and for VA leadership.
  • Will be a peer role model and mentor for investigators and a source of advice and training as required and/or needed by investigators.
  • Provides input, advice and counsel for total station planning, programming, budgeting, and general administration.
  • Manages a diverse field programs and cores that provides services central to the mission of the Medical Center and Medical Research Service.
  • Perform all duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The Selective Placement Factor (SPF) for this position is: possess experience as a funded Principal Investigator and an Administrative Manager in a funded medical research environment. To qualify for this position, ALL applicants must meet the following qualifications requirements:

Individual Occupational Requirements (Basic Education Requirements)

Possess a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education - https://ope.ed.gov/dapip/#/home at the time the degree was obtained. NOTE: You must submit copies of transcripts at the time of application. Education will not be credited without documentation. Please ensure that your transcripts show that a degree was conferred. Display copies of degrees or course listings do not provide the information needed.

In addition to meeting the Basic Education Requirements above. You must also possess the minimum qualification requirements as stated below.

For GS-14: Possess at least one (1) full year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level of (GS-13) in Federal service. Specialized experience is understanding of the differing program regulations governing human research, animal research, basic laboratory-based research, and health services research; possessing of regulations, types of research methodology to select the most appropriate administrative process; possessing of funding mechanisms, space requirements for specific types of research, and equipment needs for research programs.

IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements and Work Environment: The work is primarily performed in an office environment and requires alternating periods of walking and sedentary work. Manual dexterity is required for operating office equipment. Typing/computer operation may involve long periods of hand and wrist movement. Some travel may be required to acquire new skills or for refresher training in various aspects of the research program. Work is performed primarily in an office setting which is adequately lighted, temperature controlled and ventilated. The risks are moderate in nature.
